Is there a reef safe color that I can mix with white portland cement to make it black?
Any ideas?

Powdered carbon? Not sure if it would wash off...

I was experimenting with white clay to make porcelain frag tiles. The pottery lady told me carbon was an option to color it. I never got to trying it though.

Doesn't carbon dust increase the chance of HLLE? http://www.advancedaquarist.com/blog/activated-carbon-affirmed-as-causative-agent-for-hlle-disease

What about the standart cement pigments made out of iron oxide, would they be safe to use?

That carbon dust issue refers to it free-floating in the water. Assuming you're going to be curing the plugs, that shouldn't be an issue. I'm just not sure if it would be rich enough. I know there are some black sand-type plugs out there, but I think they use an acrylic for color. You could always send them an email and ask what's in it - maybe vaguely refer to worrying about ingredients rather than saying you want to do it yourself. ;)

Alright, thanks, going to try it with carbon then :)

The iron oxide wouldn't be safe? Label just says synthetic iron oxide (Fe3O4).

Tried carbon dust yesterday. It makes the plugs more gray than black. But maybe the dust just wasn't fine enough.

Going to try iron oxide next week. This won't make my iron levels get too high or harm anything, right?

Ok, it came today. Going to try it tomorrow.

Would the colored frag plugs adsorb phosphates and silicates like gfo because of the iron?

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE A REEFING EXAM, WOULD YOU PASS?
