Hello fellow Reefers.
I am back from a 3 break, keep in mind the break was not because I wanted too.
Some background: I have been in the hobby since 2012. My first tank was a rough established 180 gal tank all second hand got for basically nothing. It had a skimmer that would over flow if you looked at it. MH lights that were best at growing algae, I didn’t know at the time you had to change those every 6 months!
I learned allot from that tank. Then I went to another used 120 gal tank. Saved up for better used equipment. Then to a really nice custom 125 gal, which was also used.
Over the years I have never been in a position to have a new tank, or new equipment.
The reason I got out of the hobby was due to a few factors.
1. We have been slowly remodeling the house. And I have to do all the work, as we are not in a position to be able to pay others to do work I can do my self. So this causes remodels to take longer.
2. My employment Was HVAV which in my opinion is a terrible industry. I could never tell my wife when I would be home because your done when the job is done. The company’s work you 6-7 days a week during there busy seasons and they don’t care if you are out till 9pm to just get start my 6 again the next day. Not to mention the insane mark ups and false information the sales people tell the customers. so as you can see that employment dose not allow much time for family and hobby’s.
as of today my employment is much better. And now I finally have time to finish the remodel.
Prerequisites to getting my tank is remodel hall closet, add a slider door to a wall in the house. And lastly which is a must is tile my floor in kitchen dining room and hall way.
the wife has insisted that the floor gets done before I put a tank on it. And I agree because I have moved to many established tanks and would rather not go through that.
Sorry for the long ramblings.
On to the build. The first pictures will be on oct 8th. That’s when the first of equipment arrives. I have no idea which equipment is coming as I gave a list to my wife
we are also waiting on some money from our refi which we need for the tank and our remodel
Tank: still deciding on the water box peninsula 6025, water box 180 (160 gal)
Red Sea peninsula p500/p650 or the Red Sea xxl 625.
I want a peninsula but my house being only 1450 SQF it is becoming difficult to find a place it can go. My wife wants the slider on the wall I want my tank. We shall see who wins.
I love Red Sea tanks. But I really like the ply wood stands of water box. So I’m kinda leaning that way.
things that are set and stone and may have already been ordered
lighting: kessil a360x x3 (more later, keeps us in budget and I can do LPS until i add more later.
controls. Apex with trident, (dos at a later date)
skimmer: Red Sea RSK-600. I really wanted a octo sss elite. But way to much for now.
return Pump: octo various 8.
Flow/ water movement: I am undecided on this!! Maybe you can all help.I like peninsula tanks because of how clean they look. I hate having power heads on side of tank. On the over flow side is fine.
So... I am tempted to drill 2 to 4 bulk heads in on the over flow side to create a closed loop flow with a octo various or a ecotech..
Risk is if I break the tank I can not afford another one for a long while.
If I do power heads I’m leaning towered the reef octopus ones. Yes I like that brand. I have had ecotechs and there amazing.
but ideally I want closed loop.
