Coming back to Marines

Welcome, you could discuss the compatibility of your equipment to the marine side, aren't Cichlids brackish fish? are you maintaining the FW system or tearing it down? Do you get to the coast? How big was your fish? anyway welcome!

Oh i ordered a Custom display to replace the Juwel Vision 450 that housed my Cichlid "Agro". So when i first decided to go back to Marine i was going to utilize the Juwel, mostly due to the reasoning that i had built a corner style display which was my first Marine at around 380L capacity but was using a very large canister filter, small in tank skimmer, halogen down lighting and a very large powerhead, i successfully kept this display for around 3 yrs. I think the success was mostly due to my care factor and regular water changes as i lived literally 50 metres from the waters edge so water changes were a weekly thing, moved that on as i ended up moving house.

But the more i researched, i was finding many were using sumps, but a decent sump simply won't fit into the Juwel stand, well that's not entirely true i guess, it will but its just a very small space, and really not made for a sump set up so i went ahead with that in my mind as i know that Marines can be kept successfully without a sump, certainly not ideal but definitely can be done.
Anyway after about another month of research i back flipped, after falling in love with the Waterbox 230.6, it was at that point i had my reef octopus hob 2000 sent back which had just arrived at my chosen LFS and as i could not source a 230.6 Waterbox here in Oz as they only produce the 220.6 now, i decided to go my own way with a small custom build, my final Display measurements are 1850mm L x 750mm W x 630mm H (sorry bout the metric measurements)
My chosen LFS is the Waterbox distributor for my state, as i could not get the 230.6 my LFS said they will do a build to my dimensions but at the same level of finish and spec as Waterbox, with sump and 19mm starphire etc.
So am still researching but so far have 2 x R/O OP4 waves, but am still researching other equipment for the sump.
and am tearing down the Juwel and moving that on as well as all its running equipment.

Agro weighed in at just under 1.4 kilo when he passed away and just over 400mm long, he had a massively thick head :)

I will do a build thread but its going to be a while off as the display will not arrive until August i expect. OMG did i just write an essay:):)

Hi all, been using the forum resources for a while now for my research, its amazing just how much things have changed in the last 20 yrs :)
Had my 17 yr old wolf (or possibly crossbreed) cichlid pass away a few months ago, have said to myself that when that day came i would go back to Marines.
I am in Western Australia in the South West of the state.
Have overloaded on research lately and decided to order my small custom display, not due for delivery till August.
Am on a pretty tight budget i guess and cant afford the likes of Apex etc.
Catch ya round the forums, not that i have alot to discuss as most everything has been covered off, which is great as it provides a great foundation resource for me.
Regards, B.

Welcome! You don’t need all the latest technology to enjoy this hobby, you just have to like what you’ve got!

Thanks Gabriel, you are right, what i have learnt regarding the hobby is that spending the most on all the top brands certainly does not ensure success.
I am trying to spend wisely sourcing the best for my buck and a great deal of my budget went into the display i wanted, its hard when there are so many products on offer nowadays, marines have taken many leaps from when i was running my first marine aquarium, the market is saturated with so many options now. Like many, until i win lotto there is much research to be done as we all want the very best we can afford within our respective budgets, so no Abyzz return pumps for me, i did come across that name and thought the spec was good, then i saw the prices here in Oz, my goodness, sexxy but exxy!
