commence system upgrade

Guess the only way to find out is to do it up. Have bout half the water I need sitting on the floor waiting already. I'll update later

Seriously good luck and I really hope that I am wrong. But that is totally improper for an aquarium stand and no expert would ever advise you to use that shelving unit as an aquarium stand. It is not what it is designed for and my feeling is that it will fail. It will either outright collapse or rack and fall diagonally. :(

A 30 gallon tank can weight around 300 pounds. A 40 gallon tank around 400 pounds.

EACH SHELF must be rated for MORE than that weight.

If you are unsure of the manufactures weight rating, either call them to verify it or pick another stand.

Your trust should be mostly irrelevant, it's literally a question of construction materials.

That looks like a very inexpensive garage shelf unit. I could be wrong but I don't ever remember seeing one of those with that high of a weight rating.

As long as you can verify it is rated properly for the weight you have in mind (figure 10lbs/gal for a conservative figure), then you should have no problem.

Just make sure the tank never gets bumped. Those stands are wobbly, and 400 pounds of horizontal inertia would be a really bad thing for them. [emoji41]

Forgot to mention the flipside…

If you cannot verify it, I would definitely select a stand for which you can know the rating.

As has been suggested they are not very expensive to build from wood.

Metro and InterMetro brands as well as all of the big box hardware store knockoffs would be probably at least as good or better of a choice if you want to go with that kind of stand. Also relatively inexpensive.

I even have to disagree with this. That is not a proper stand in any way, shape or form to use for an aquarium. Those shelves are not designed for such a large, off center weight. The only thing that keeps the actually shelf from buckling is the metal sides that are bent under. Anything at all goes south with that setup - a minor bump, filling it, etc and that shelf buckles. The horizontal racking and failure is almost a certainty. Not to mention that all of the weight of the tank is as a sheer load on the 4 points where the shelf attaches to the frame. That is a no-no even with a wood stand. Really there is nothing good about this and the OP needs to swallow his pride and ****-can this entire setup and go with a traditional wood stand or anything else that is made for aquarium use. I REALLY hope there are no kids in this house because a setup like this capable of killing someone when (not if) it goes.

looks scary hope you have re-thought this stand would suck tospend the money on all that then just have to sweep it all up off the floor. lots of good advice given here I think if more then one person chimed in it be best to follow it. JMO

have to wait for warmer weather to remove the paint from plastic trim. anyone have better suggestion for the haze from mineral deposits, vinegar was effective @ breaking up the chunks but not making the glass 100% clear. for that matter is it better even possible, or is the glass etched.
Try a diluted mixture of muriatic acid.
