Hi I'm new to the saltwater community. My mom used to work at a saltwater wholesaler, and I've always wanted a salt tank....but holey crap this is a lot more complicated than freshies. Is there any way to have a simple, inexpensive setup? I'm not asking for Mollys in a five gallon with a rudimentary filter...but.... What kind of fish would I get? I don't want corals...temperamental....just a small community tank. I have a few species I like but don't know how well they would do for a beginner:
Pajama cardinals
Box fish
Yellow tang
Wrass
Snowflake eel

It all depends on what size tank you choose on the fish you want.
If you talk about 10 gallon only one of your listed fish will work, you going 20 gallon just only two will make the cut.
I hope you got the picture here.
There is plenty of info on this side you should read into it first or sit down with your Mom and swap out some ideas.
Some ppl just don't get it and disregards all info that's given to them, https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/need-help-bad.217041/
Don't be shy on asking us lots of questions once you made the decision what size tank you going with.
Good luck and Welcome to R2R.

its only as complicated as you want it to be. but youre looking at a very large tank for the fish you want.
