Yes, it's a whelk.

Species is Probably Melongena corona. They are predatory on clams and snails.

Need a better pic, but based on what I see, looks like nassarius, good guy. Does it emerge from the sand when you feed?

No, because nassarius don't have an operculum on their foot.

He rarely emerges (never on rocks or glass) but when he does it's at feeding time. I have noticed all my other snails are gone except my tiny ones which are often high on the glass. That's what led to my investigation.

To the sump it goes. If you know someone with a puffer or trigger, it could make a tasty snack.
