I checked my salinity levels with two different instruments to see if they were the same levels. With my refractometer my reading is 36ppt and with my Hanna marine digital salinity tester it reads 33ppt. I believe those ranges are both okay I just don’t know which instrument is more reliable in regards to which i should use to figure out if i need to increase or decrease salinity. Anyone have any thoughts on which instrument I should rely on?

I personally have had issues with the Hanna and don’t trust it. My recommendation is get some standard solution and calibrate the refractometer to it. I also have a tropic Marin hydrometer and periodically check that it’s reading accurate.

I calibrated my refractometer with accubrate refractometer calibration fluid so should be okay. i will use the refractometer for readings. thank you!

Fwiw, I used my Hanna handheld Salinity checker for about a year and a half and then it started giving me all sorts of funky numbers. Tried replacing the battery, recalibrating with their solution, the whole 9 yards and still wouldnt work. It's in a landfill somewhere now.

Anyway, I use hydrometers and a refractometer again. Hanna was nice till it lasted. :confused-face:
