Confused and nervous.

81 is not a worrisome temp. How long have you had him for? Fish age doesn't always correlate with their life stage.

Even though 81 is within the normal temp range, it will accelerate their life cycle. Couple that with what stage of life he was in when purchased, if he was already a male, and if there are other wrasses in a tank, perhaps where he had a period of dominance, then you end up with a "worn out" fish.

If there are no other fish in the tank that are showing similar signs I would be reluctant to treat. Also, if he is not scratching I would be reluctant to stress him further by trying to catch him out.

Well, I am pretty sure it is on it's way out. He's laying on the sand and I think he is reaching his end. As soon as he dies I will take out and do a fw dip checking for flukes. This sucks. :( he was my favorite

Sorry for the loss. Unfortunately, wrasse are susceptible to a myriad of diseases/parasites/issues. Most fish are, but wrasse seem to have more issues with internal parasites, poor collection practices, handling medications, and other things.

I lost mine too, which was very strange. They're generally a very hardy species. The good news though, if it is any consolation, is that it is not the most expensive fish to replace. I have killed far more expensive fish and felt like a complete idiot (on top of the compassion I feel for killing one of God's creatures that I assumed responsibility of caring for)

Actually it pulled through as of now. The fish was basically dead so I walked out to eat breakfeast, and he is swimming around looking normal. I'm praying he stays alive. Thanks for the support!

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have a banzai Cardinal that was literally laying flat on the sand for a few minutes until he got up and he hasn't had any problems since then.i think he just needed a break from the flow

It makes me mad because I don't know what it is.

Wrasse can die without any real rhyme or reason. I consider halichoeres very hardy but recently I have even struggled with them. Hell I've had better luck with freaking leopard wrasses!
