We procured an Orange Shoulder Tang probably about 8 months ago...closing in on a year. It was a very bold two-tone grey with the blue outlines on dorsal and anal fins, and the trademark orange epaulets surrounded with blue. Within a month, the coloration regressed into lemon yellow (juvenile coloration), and the namesake shoulder coloration has faded markedly, to the point that the blue around the orange has all but disappeared.

This fish is living in a 300gal reef with a Pacific Sailfin, Yellow Eye Kole, a Hippo, and a Powder Brown. It's the second largest of the tangs at about 4-5" (second only to the Hippo), and one of the most dominant personalities in the group. It eats like a pig, any and all food types offered...and it also eats sand. I never see it actually eat it, but I frequently see the darn thing poop sand.

Has anyone else out there ever observed a fish in its adult coloration backtrack completely into juvie colors? And if so, do they ever return to adult colors? He's pretty striking and all, but what we really liked was the grown up look we started with.

In most cases of regression of color or transitioning backwards, it has to do with social dynamics and it's role within the hierarchy.

If it's position in the hierarchy changes it may decide that it is safer/energy-efficient to revert back than it is to always deal with rivals for the top spot.

As it grows and social situations change it should transition forward again.

I agree, mine didn't color up until he realized he was bigger than the Yellow and the Hippo. He also cleared all the sand from under one of the bigger rocks down the glass he hangs out there after lights are off.

I had a juvie Atlantic Blue Tang that did the same tang. He was not full blown adult color when I got him but he was close and went all the way back to bright, bright yellow.

I think your tang is gorgeous! If he transitions back great, if he doesn't great!

You can see him briefly in this QT video

And here he is a couple of weeks after completing QT.

Wow...quite the change. This is the second Orange Shoulder I've had regress like this. To all intents and purposes, he's well adjusted and happy...just chromatically challenged.

This is currently happening to my OST! I'm so glad I found others who've experienced this. I thought maybe he's sick, but he eats like crazy, no spots or ich and is extremely active in my 180G tank. I do have a large Naso in the tank who is certainly the dominant of the tank so I'm guessing the OST is "regressing" in his color change due to him. I'm fine with that, as long as he's healthy and happy :). Thanks all!
