Merry Christmas everyone! I’m redoing my Red Sea 250’s plumbing, and want to connect my UV Sterilizer to the main drain using a connector tee. I haven’t seen anyone ever do this as they only connect things to the return line. Do you think this would work and turn out ok?

I don’t think you get much flow the way you have it drawn since the path of least resistance is straight down.
also with the UV you want to minimize air going through it which is really hard from the drain line. You will also need to clean/maintain the UV more frequently since it would be fed pre filtration. I would recommend running it in line with the return.

That will likely be too much flow for the uv, check the flow recommendations for your uv unit.

I won’t do it then. Would it be fine if I were to plumb it from the return line?

mine is plumbed into my return. I would use a ball valve before the UV so you can adjust flow if necessary and also to help facilitate with maintenance. You can put a union above the UV which will allow you to remove the UV if necessary. Also think about swapping bulbs. It is great if you can make it so you don’t have to remove the unit to do so but can be tough were space is tight.

I would advise having a separate pump for your UV filter. Redundancy and separation of systems reduces catastrophic failures.

Nobody really do this as this is not an efficient way of using uv and takes away the ability to adjust the flow.
Uv most efficient when plumed to display to display.

Plumbed inline with the return pump will work fine, but it is hard to measure the flow rate going through the uv. Tee off main line, then ball valve on each line so you can adjust flow. Better if each line went to separate return nozzles.

Easier to just have a dedicated pump for the uv with the correct flow rate.

You will need to add a valve you can use to adjust the flow, assuming it gets enough flow there to start with. If you can get the max flow for all purposes, and then throttle it back with the valve it would be a nice setup. Otherwise, you might just be wasting a UV light.

I personally have my UV on it's own pump.

Works but maybe not efficient.
Pulling direct from the DT to UV and back would perform better.

FWIW, I feed my UV from a siphon drain. But, I had designed the drains thus and have multiple, independent siphons for different purposes. Probably it’s not the simplest option, but it can be done.

Hi guys, just a quick question. If a UV is connected to a separate pump, what would be the ideal location in the sump to put the pump in to pump water into the UV and where would you direct the output coming out of the UV.

I have a redsea 625xxl with the V3 sump. My plan is to put the pump next to the skimmer and plumb the output into the return section of the pump. Hope this is a good plan. Any help is much appreciated. Cheers

I have a UV running off my return. It’s powered by a controlled return pump, so I can choose any flow rate I want. Make sure the water enters the bottom of the UV and exits the top. I beat dinoflagellates this way. Be sure to mount the UV so that you can change the bulb easily.
