Connecting Separate Sumps

See my change in red below, you might have to shorten or extend PVC.

I had to connect two sumps using a "water bridge" while doing a repair on a bulkhead. Take a piece of flexible tubing (appx. 1" OD) and place it so that one end is in each sump thereby creating an arch. Make sure both ends will be completely submerged at all times. Run some airline tubing up one end until it reaches the apex of the arch, then suck the air out and prime the siphon. The water level in each sump will equalize.

I only did this on a short term basis and would highly recommend drilling your sumps and installing bulkheads. A malfunction could be disasterous.

Check out glassholes for a good tutorial on drilling glass for bullhead installation. You'll be amazed at how easy it is.

In my Daughters 265 stand she had two refugiums, on drilled the other not and one pump to make it all work together. No I did not do a true siphon but a 1" up and over into the drilled suction via a T in the drilled tank. The T allowed me to throttle the suction in the drilled tank and match or balance the flow. Each refugium was fed separately from the main tank. Yes I was within 1/8" of overflowing the main tank while balancing the system out the first time around. The undrilled refugium was also taller than the drilled one but it worked. I did notice that while draining the drilled refugium via siphon hose, they were moving everything, that the undrilled tank siphoned across to the other tank until suction was lost. So it should work for you as well. Risks, yes you have flowing water in a house, maintaining the water level in the main tank was key for her but the system ran for over a year.

"U-tubes" are very much known for failing and considering that if that failed you will immediately start to spill display water from the wet dry. Have you considered a hang-on refugium? There's also a possibility of running a completely separate sump/fuge, setup exactly as you have in diagram only the fuge will run independently from the wet/dry.
