My house seems to have random power outages. Only lasting seconds or minuets. But it's enough to flood my basement make my top off pump 5 gallons of fresh IMO my tank... Fry my wave maker and leave me with my last ounce of sanity.

sounds like you need to invest in a back up system. I've used the APC backups from office max, cheap and reliable.

Check valves, if the power was out wouldn't that turn off your ATo though? You could put your ATo on a controller and only have it turn on once a day for a few minutes. I personally only use a 20g top of tank for that reason if something ever went crazy it would mess with my salinity but not kill everything. It causes me to fill it every other day but I have a 40g ATo above it with a ball valve I turn that and it dumps water into the ATO attached to the tank. The 40g tank only adds water to the ATO when I physically do it.

Yeah thats definitely the way to do it.... definitely beats the manually adding 4-5g of top off daily by hand like I have been doing for a few years now on my 180g (225-250g total volume). Sad part is, I have the ATO for my controller, a spare pump, even a few extra tanks I could use as reservoirs.... but I just never take the time to set it all up lol

I have my return pump on an APS Battery backup along with my powerheads and heaters. The lights go out when the power goes out but the water keeps flowing.
