Consuming your macroalgae as food

This might sound insane but has anyone ever tried eating their macroalgae? I'm thinking about getting some Ulva lactucathe and eating some of it when it grows too big.

Not sure if i would go there but i throw out about 3 gallons of chaeto a week from my 2 refugiums (180 g tank and 200 g tank). Hmmm, maybe mix in with some salad? Probably not

Out of curiosity, what steps would you take to ensure it's 'clean' enough to eat?

Some people have, yes, but it’s strongly recommended against unless it’s in a clean system purely dedicated to the farming of macroalgae for human consumption due to contamination concerns (from both metals and toxins):

There are some scholarly articles available about land-based macro farming if anyone is interested, but it’d probably take me a while to sort through and find a few useful ones.
