Contests

Normally I’d agree but SBB corals live sales are a whole new experience and my games are always interesting. 12:00 noon eastern time Sunday game. Winner gets $50 gift card. If you don’t wanna play it’s cool….

They don't need my money and I don't want the product, I'm good. :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

You do you and enjoy your 'sale'. Which IMO most online coral 'sales' are a joke.

I've never seen a real contest on r2r... all I see is a bunch of "raffle ticket" bribes from sponsors to make you like them on social media and give a false positive review... which is bad for anyon3 looking for honest reviews... I think this practice is atrocious and is the reason we can't trust positive product reviews without in depth analysis reviews on forums.

Clicking a like button and begging to be chosen is not a contest. It's a free advertising ploy that is worth way more to them than whatever crap they're giving away for free to one person only. The greed and calling these things contests are just insulting to the real hobbyists. We are here for the community... reviews and likes should be earned. Not bribed for.
I don't see liking a page as giving a false positive review. I have never given a review for a contest nor even seen that as a bonus or requirement to enter. I think the contests allow us to discover other vendors out there and going to their website or FB page allows us to check them out, and read what others have to say. I never pay attention to how many likes a page has, all it does is allow you to follow them. It's not a review or endorsement.

I still think participating is a way to support R2R who needs support from vendors otherwise they'd have to charge us, the members to keep this great forum going

How selfless of you
*applause you were looking for*
Vendors aren't begging for our participation... they're just trying to make their fortunes. I don't think it's as personal as you're making it out to be.
My point is supporting R2R with participation (they do need vendor support in order to support us) and that you do not have to accept any win you do not want or need. If you don't want/need, they will redraw and the prize goes to someone who does want it.

I will enter if it's something I am interested in, but I rarely do the "extra entry" as this typically involves social media which I don't have.
I don't share contests on social media either. My contacts are not "fish" people so it wouldn't do any good.

I’m in uk so I’m sure you wouldn’t ship to here

Well we can agree to disagree as to weather or not liking a page full of products you (or maybe not you, but most people entering for the free stuff) have never used is a false positive review.

There is nothing wrong with vendors and sponsors and ads... this forum must be making money hand over fist though as it has more of all of those then any other forum I've ever used... and they try to squeeze money out of every single member for the basic abilities that should come standard with any forum such as the ability to edit your own threads.

I've thought about giving them money to be a supporting member or whatever... the money is no big deal... but I find they don't put the hobbyist/forum users first... and I think people need to earn it before they deserve it. This forum was great back in the day... which is why everyone came here from reef central... but like all entities... once they get too big and no longer have basic competition... they stop caring about the user experience and only look at $$$ as they know there aren't other lively forums for people to go to anymore.. sad reality of business.
I still love this forum... but I've been around long enough to remember what it once was... which makes it easier to see what it now is.

But back to the contest thing... here's an example... this is the most recent one I've seen at the top of the forum for me this morning

And here is the definition of contest:

Here is the definition of bribe:

I will enter certain giveaways if I’m interested in the product. That said, I just do the main entry. I don’t do the unlimited bonuses of update a thread, post a thread, share to social media, etc etc etc.

I also do not enter contests with 100’s of posts usually as my odds are much less. (What can I say, I’m greedy and want to win).

I do occasionally participate in live sales but even then it’s just the fun and not like I’m actually buying anything. Most of the time the sale price is negated by shipping

That said I am participating in the BC grow out contest as that’s more of an actual contest not just luck of automated number spinner

As you just pointed out, why do I have to subscribe to someone else's mailing list to enter. It's a total turn off to me. I don't mind the internal forum stuff, but why do I have to go outside of r2r to do it. It comes off as screaming money and marketing to me.

I can agree with some of what others have said above. I am down to share my build tread, get my free entry for my already helping to support the site financially, and any other fun entry tasks.
I stopped doing the social media entries a while back. Even as a 'younger' person (pre- 30s), I just have no intereset in going out and liking and following all these people. It just turns your social feed into marketing adds.

Don't get me wrong, I follow vendors when I see the value in it, but for a social contest I have a 1 of 100,000 chance to win or what not, it just isnt worth my time.

One other thing I wanted to throw out there, is I always start by deciding if the item up for grabs will benefit me directly, if not I keep out of the drawing to allow others who really could use it a better chance to win. No sense in being greedy and winning something I don't need.

I so do not understand why more members do not enter the contests. It is a great way to show support to R2R, and to their sponsors. Not only that, but the giveaways are awesome. It doesn't take that long to do either. I could keep quiet and give myself more changes lol's but I honestly do not get why there isn't more participation. I do realize that most are for USA only I think, but still.

To date I have won:
2 Octo boxes-had Daniel redraw for the 2nd one
Marco rock but I'd just bought my rock for the new build so another redraw
4 LA gift certificates.

So take the time to show your support!
I read the terms and conditions, everything is USA based (unless new posts are different)
All competitions require a USA zip code, so I don't even bother anymore, thanks though

Agree :) :)

I actually do not think any of those definitions apply There is no power, no quality, no supremacy. Even Bribe is rather far-fetched.

I do not know the financial status of R2R, nor was I a member before 107, but I do know, compared to the other forums, I can attribute my successes to this forum, and the people here so will gladly contribute as a supporting member, and yeah, a partner as well. It is no different than subscribing to a magazine, or buying books on the subjects and I get a lot more information.

And yes, I entered that contest too. I do my own phyto and pods but if I won, I wound't turn down free stuff for the tank. And now I know there is another source of pods if my culture crashes and yes, I might give them a try. And no, I didn't share on any social network

Well of course someone in the bourgeois wouldn't describe it as the bourgeois... What would you describe it as then? No other word really fits it...
