Anyone dose this? Lfs sells it. Bottle reads 5 ml per 50g. 2 - 3 times a week. I'm going 5 ml per 100 twice a week am I safe? Opinions?

Agree. I'm under the understanding that iodide evaporates within 4 days.... correct?

I'm assuming if it evaporates within 4 days that would be why I'm not seeing anyone testing it. This is why I'm asking. I'm under the impression that iodine is beneficial for inverts, macro algae and Z's n P's. I'm not against testing but if it's not a necessity than yah...

Good question. However, I have always been taught to never put chemicals in my tanks without being able to test for it. I just bought a friends tank complete with all fish and corals. She swears by using it, and her tank is beautiful. Just goes to show, trial and error.

Well hopefully someone with more chemistry education will chime in here and make me feel safe or unsafe. Lol. I generally feel the same way as u guys in testing.

Lots of threads on this topic. RHF wrote a good article discussing this years back. Long but interesting read.
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2003/3/chemistry

Note this particular excerpt from the article "In the subsequent sections, it is made clear that macroalgae often thrive at elevated iodide or iodate levels, sometimes better than at natural levels. Whether this extends to other organisms in marine aquaria is not known."

The "if you don't test for it don't dose it" ideology doesn't really seem to apply here. Your test kit likely isn't accurate enough for a true reading, and even if it was, the"right" levels in reef aquaria are apparently unknown.

Iodine and iodide are different, I use red sea coral colors and been dosing for a couple years, current daily dosing schedule is: A iodine 1.5ml, B potassium .45ml, C iron .10ml D iodide and trace elements .10ml - in a 90g display + 20g frag tank + 25g sump. I dose mainly to Color up my sps and do minimal water changes. Also, i only test iodine and potassium. Increase slowly as you can easily overdose and kill off inverts or cause a huge growth in algae.

I have always read that with regular water changes you shouldnt need to dose Iodine. Also, I heard they dont make reliable test kits for it.. I thought about giving it a try though..lol

Uh yah okay I thought iodide was just a diluted version of iodine. Hmmm I'm looking dumber by the minute! Lol. Thanks though this is why I ask.

If the instruction say that do it. Lugols is like 1 drop per 10 gallons. Iodide on aqua vitro is 4mil per 100g so yes it sounds ok

So is iodide the same as iodine? Or give the same benefits?

Great advice from all. Testing!!!! Always test for everything first. I use Lugols.

I dont test for iodine. I do use 1 drop per 25 gals of Lugols every sunday night into the sump area.
I thought i read its 1 drop per 25 gals not 10 gals....
Either way been doing it for a long while now. My hammers are splitting, my frogspawn are splitting, clams growing, shrimp molt all the time....

Anyone know where the best place to find lugos is? I haven't had any luck.

I got mine on Amazon cheaper there too.
They have a lot of stuff there, food, salt, sand, etc...
Just compare prices, most of the time they have the best prices but sometimes they sneak in something more expensive.
Pays to have a Prime account too... Free shipping.

I seen that. If I do that the wife knows I bought stuff though. Lol. Gotta buy it local and sneak it in the house! hahaha
