Was just thinking that someone who is super smart on the APEX should offer a service. Have the individual tell you what they want, they give you there information to log in, make the changes and boom.. You just helped someone out!
Anyone ever tried this?
I have been asked several times to provide paid consulting engagements on Apex setups. There are a couple of reasons I don't take up these offers:
1. There are so many variables on how people set up their equipment, and without being there in person to see how things are connected, the potential to make an assumption and get something wrong is high, in particular with people who are new to reefing.
2. If something goes wrong, the liability and risk of someone taking legal action due to the high cost of lost corals and home damage is not worth it.
I agree with
@Alchameth above (though the metaphor may have been a bit off...) that it's better to teach someone how to use the Apex than to set it up for them. For example, if something goes wrong in the middle of the night, the Apex owner should be knowledgeable enough to figure it out without outside help.
I spent over 30 years doing IT support, and now that I'm retired, reefing is my new hobby. I happened to take a liking to the Apex enough that I spend every day here on Reef2Reef (where I've
written many Apex tutorials), the
Neptune Community Forums, and the
Apex Facebook Group answering questions from Apex users around the world. I do this for fun and out of generosity. But taking on paid engagements would take the fun out of it and make me worry about being responsible if something fails.
