I need help controlling detritus and particles inside my tank, I don't run any filter socks and don't plan on it. I was thinking on increasing flow via a gyre pump and also sticking a powerhead inside my sump for detritus get pulled out via skimmer.

I read the title and was like: "remote control detritus??"

(its late) :P

There are either not enough corals in the tank, or your flow is too low....or both. Sounds like you're on the right track for at least one of those, maybe both?

what do you mean by not enough corals in the tank? I don’t think that’s the issue I have a lot of SPS, but I keep getting detritus on my back glass and settling inside my sump. My system is a bare bottom. It could need more flow

Corals consume detritus i think he means. But if they consume aquarium detritus is just assumption.

If you want control of it, your best bet is more flow and switch to a substrate free tank.

A little more detail on your system would help. I also eschew mechanical filtration and don't have a detritus problem. Massive in-tank flow helps to keep things in suspension and either eaten, floated off by the skimmer, or collect as inert mulm at the bottom of my sump. An awesome substrate for smaller critters.

I think you nailed it.

Some of the most popular pumps don't generate enough flow velocity to effectively move detritus/keep it from settling, so it's a common issue.

Apart from cosmetic issues, I'm not sure how much concern it's directly worthy of however. As @ca1ore said, it's a net-positive when it's around.....it's a home for pods, it's a positive source of alkalinity, as well as phosphates. All things that your tank needs! (Just maybe not laying all over the floor and walls.)

IMO it's just an indicator that your corals would like more/better flow. "I can smell that food, but I don't have feet! Argh!!!!!!" :D

I have an open sump with a 1000-gph propellor pump in it to keep things moving, and tons of flow in the display and haven't had signs of settling detritus anywhere, BTW. Before I added the sump pump I would get some buildup down there.
