@Randy Holmes-Farley Would you be open to having a conversation (debate?) with Claude at fauna mainly over his claims with the bolus method right now and claims about kalk. Would like to ask Adam at frag garage to host it, they are live right now

Referring too this thread https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/bolus-dosing.1055204/post-12541576

Did I imagine the bit where he said pH probes should be calibrated 4 and 7 because they work better than 7 and 10? Don't want to watch it again, lol.

There was so much gabbagool I wouldn't be surpised lol.

"Maybe the science is wrong" holy copium... How is a method promoted by a company that says you can only use their product for the method and wont elaborate on the details or chemistry of said method not clearly bs. I can't stand hearing him demonize kalk with zero evidence to back it up. Pretty convenient to say one of the cheapest and most well known methods will crash your tank and the only solution is the product im selling.

I would also add a strange recurrence of the phrase "pulling up my big boy pants". Doug used it in the livestream, and a poster on the Bolus dosing thread you linked. Must be a coincidence. I don't like coincidence.

I believe FM sell kalk:

I am not sure they are demonizing it.

The issues FM stated in the past:
1) kalk when dosed has precipitation and that this precipitation can accumulate over time. At least something to that effect. If I recall all high pH additives suffer from precipitation, I had it bad with hydroxide so I gave up on it. Had to clean my pump monthly, while dosing bicarbonate I clean them once a year.

2) The ratio in kalk leans on calcium side. Correction may be required.

3) when dosed from ATO you can end up with inconsistent doses/ instabilities .

I believe all have been mentioned on R2R so…

From my experience I tried kalk and I did not like the mixing etc…
Also mixing bicarbonate seems safer, playing with liquid that is 7-8pH vs. 10+ pH with kids and pets at home seems safer. But that is my opinion only. I take full responsibility for any incorrect information in the last statement.

When I have time I will need to watch this episode.

What entertaining week…

I’d be happy to address any responses he makes to my comments, and I can certainly make more to his, but I’m not particularly interested in a live discussion debate.

If people are consistently getting Alkalinity readings at just less than half of what historically we get you could ask him if his production team have hit the pounds to kilos conversion button on their set of scales.

I hope he does respond, said hes planning on releasing another HTU… Will see

I’d advise him to give directions and suggest what it visually and analytically (test results) accomplishes in experiments he has done, rather that try to explain underlying chemical principles . in this case, they only served to distract and to weaken the proposal, IMO.

Stating whether his product is different than pure bicarbonate would also be useful.

Garf, this is fairly common phrase this side of the pond. Shall I take a photo with a banana on my head in front of my tank to show that I am very much not Doug :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Nah. I'm this side of the pond as it happens and it's not that common at all. You could dose some of that Balling lite Alk additive into some fresh salt water and measure the Alk increase though. See if it matches the instructions on the bottle. Ta
