Noob question I’m sure, but what would you all do? I purchased this tank used and from what I understand this is setup as a Herbie style overflow? Should I try to drill the back glass for my return so I can setup the Overflow to a Herbie style? Is it even worth the effort? Since the tank is used, is there even a way to determine if the back glass is tempered? Thanks in advance!

3 drain lines is a bean animal drain system. Does the overflow box not connect to a box inside the tank?

I would assume the previous owner did a bean animal with the returns just going over the back glass.

There’s a return notch in the skim box so I’d suspect one of the three lines from the external box was a return. T’were me I would convert to a bean, yes. It really is better, particularly if you are going to go with higher flow rates. I would not personally bother grinding a hole for a return. Assuming the back is not tempered you cannot get the hole close enough to the surface to limit back siphon .... so you end up with excess pvc elbows in the tank. Use some black pvc and just go over the back rim.

Yes, it was setup so the return came through with line loc on the right hand side of the skim box. This tank is rimless, so I’m concerned about going over the edge will be very unsightly. Thanks again

Can anyone tell me where I could buy a piece of abs without the return notch so I could bring the returns over the back and convert to bean animal?
