Hello Everyone!

Hopefully someone (or a few of you) can help me out. I have a 55 gal acrylic aquarium and I have recently pulled it out of a box that it was in for >5 years. Needless to say there are a few scratches and old dried out algae. I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to clean it up and will not harm the future inhabitants of the tank. I was told that I have to be careful with polishes for the acrylic with it seeping out later on and that I sould just get a glass tank and ditch the one I have. Please help if you can! Thank You All!

Water and vinegar bath rinse well and fill with water see how bad it looks. Lots of stuff isn't as noticeable when filled n check for leaks. They sell buffing n polishing kits for them so they're completely safe to use if you need to. Hopefully this helps a little.

+1 to this. I would definitely do a leak test on it before you do anything else. If it's leaking at any point, you wouldn't want to invest the time in cleaning and money in the buffer kits. I would suggest filling it up and leaving it overnight (be sure it's in a place that it won't matter if it leaks). Then if all is well, go to work with the water and vinegar. Acrylic polish kits can be picked up at most LFS.
