I’d like to plumb my current tank into the basement, I’ve had a basement sump before and loved every aspect of it. I wish I had taken more time and done it on the current setup but I didn’t realize I could make it into the basement from where the tank was (actually still a little unsure if it possible).

Current tank sits in the living room, which was converted to a garage, no access to basement through floor. The wall behind the tank is the chimney which is made up of masonry block and then, studs and drywall (no access there). Around the corner from my tank is a little cubby where my current equipment cabinet sits. Through the molding on the bottom if I were to cut holes I would be in the basement (Didn’t realize this until some work was being done in the basement, silly me). I’ll show a picture of what I mean.

My current house was built in the 60’s by a mason, loooooved concrete and was fearful of wars and bombings apparently, because he built some sort of “Bomb Shelter” it’s about 150 sqft room that’s 1 foot thick concrete all four walls, ceiling and floor. We currently use it for storage and totes (basically all her crap). I was thinking about turning this room into my fish room, sump and all of our wildest dreams. However, I’m concerned about moisture. We do have a dehumidifier down there with a pump, but it’s in the main basement area (very old, will upgrade). My initial thought would be to add an exhaust fan to that room using an existing 12 inch diameter hole to pull out air from the fish room, into the main basement area and let the dehumidifier do its thing.

Anyone see any issues with that idea?

I personally would not do that, the dehumidifier will be running 24/7...
also doubt it will be able to keep up with both the basements needs and the volume of additional overhead place on it with the sump and other tanks being in there.. can you exhaust outside your home?

I assume I can't run some sort of venting line from the exhaust fan to a basement window that's about 15 feet away?

The only other way would be to cut into the foundation to the outside...not sure if I should go that route.

If the room in question in next to an external wall and you're willing and have access to the rafters (ceiling joist, rafter ties) you can look at adding a "basement fan" like the one below.

I have two, one controlled by my apex and regulated via temperature, the other is on a Dayton dehumidifier Plug.

The room in question is made out of concrete. Its literally some sort of fallout shelter. lol

Now the entrance to it, well around the corner, it kind of is a snake entrance has access to ceiling joists.

even the ceiling?
gezz that's a bit extreme, guess he was prepping for a doomsday scenario;)

That might be your only option, you can always add a fan to blow air out of the room and into the hallway to be exhausted afterwards.

lol... yeah it's a bunker... wow!

but wow, that's a GREAT space for a FTR!

FTR? lol...Fish tank room?

Yes, it would be an awesome place to escape to. Just want to tackle the heat/humidity issue that will most likely arise from have the amount of water that I plan on putting down there.

you know me, IDIY and have no issue jacking an opening into a wall...
but it's 100% your call and you would have to feel comfortable making it!

yes FTR = Fish Tank Room;)

What would you envision for a DIY? Just a hole with an exhaust fan to the outside?
Basical, yes!
but I also like things to be aesthetically pleasing so would keep that in mind, but again that's me.

At least when the wife is mad, you can hang out in the fish bunker and feel relatively safe.. Lol

a plus for me was that after I installed the fans I noted above the dehumidifier is now never used, my basement stay in the low to mid 40s relative humidity.

That's the goal man, a buddy of mine basically has his fish room and it looks like a science lab, all white, neat, testing supplies, permanent computer set up...the whole 9 man

So this is one of the corners outside the bunker area. Could I put an exhaust fan going outside and attach some sort of duct going into that hole where it would pull the air from the fish room to outside?

The wall to the right is an exterior wall with exposed joist above it.
