I want to get a convict tang sooner rather than later. I’m creating a peaceful tank and trying to plan this out carefully. I have some of my more docile fish already. I want to still get a neon goby, fairy wrasse, royal gramma, and maybe anthias. Can I get the convict tang now or wait to introduce later?

There are a couple exceptions, but for the most part, tangs only care about other tangs and similarly shaped fishes (butterflies, angels, rabbits, etc), in my experience.

What size tank will this be going into?

It’s going to be a 130 gallon. What are your guys thoughts. So I ordered the royal gramma and the convict tang. I thought to put the royal gramma in first then like 30 minutes later out the convict in. The only other fish I’m gonna put in afterwards is anthias, goby, blue throat trigger and possible foxface one spot.

Convicts are pretty mellow, really should be fine. Bigger challenge is getting to and keeping them at a healthy weight. Any I have had came in very thin and you have to feed them a ton of nori. I've had a zebra (Mauritius convict) for a year ..... it grazes constantly ..... And has taken a year to put on some weight.

Thanks. I ordered what was classified as medium (2-3”). I’ll pick up some different flavors of nori before he gets here Tuesday. I was just worried about the royal and maybe a future goby but one of the reason other than beauty was I kept hearing other threads saying how mellow and non-aggressive they are.

i loved my convict tang. It was peaceful. I could not get it to keep weight on. I was putting 3 sheets of nori a day into the tank and it was still losing weight. I could not get it to eat anything else and it eventually wasted away.

I hope you have good luck. I would love to try again someday.

That is true. My Yellow Tang was added at the same time as my Coral Beauty Angel and at first they got along great but then I noticed a chunk missing from the tip of my Coral Beauty's lower fin and then periodic white marks on it's side, which were a mystery to me until the Yellow flared it's fins towards the coral beauty and backed up and did a tail whack with it's scalpel and a fresh new white mark appeared on the coral beauty. The Coral Beauty has been a model citizen and has been near bulletproof (survived ich, a traumatic transfer from the LFS, got a chunk taken out of it's forehead and tail and a few other minor injuries from the Yellow Tang) and he keeps bouncing back and doing well. As a result, the Yellow Tang had to go and was given the boot.
