I was sitting quietly at school, thinking about reefing and just came up with what I think is a cool idea/experiment. What if I was to set up a small tank outside during the summer and grow mangroves in it and maybe turn it into a cool ecosystem. What are your thoughts.

I think that sounds like a awesome idea! I’m sure you could get a pretty great ecosystem going by doing that. If you do please keep me updated!

A local reefer to me actually does this. When he does a water change he puts the water into a 50 gal water trough with mangroves and macros galore. Main issue he faced when starting was salinity and hair algea. I talked to him for a while about it.
Maintenance is:
Check salinity every other day
Top off with rodi or salt depending
Never test the water
If a heavy rain is predicted he covers it with a tarp
Monthly 30 gallon fresh salt water

Stocking:
6 bangi cardinals
3 chromis
1 lawnmower blenny

Equipment:
2 4k ice cap gyers
24 in pvc pipe with air pump for additional air movement
60+ lbs of live rock
Sand
Miracle mud

In the winter he brings everything into his garage

Biggest issue is with evap and high Ohio temps.

It will be 4 years old this summer I think.
If you have any questions I can try to relay them.

That sounds cool. What other stocking suggestions do you have?

@Tannermule I would love to see pictures of his system, if you were interested in taking some and he was interested in letting you do so.

Other than manually adding saltwater/RODI water to keep salinity stable and testing daily, I wonder about the effectiveness of using an apex salinity probe and a two head doser attached to RODI and a hypersaline water mix along with an ATO to keep salinity stable in an outdoor tank?
