Cooling fan recommendation

Hi All,

Looking to possibly add a cooling fan to my system. Weather is getting hot and don't want to run AC longer than necessary. Any thoughts on the following fans? Any additional recommendations? There are tons of them on the market.

I got the 2 fan version from saltwater aquarium.com hooked up to an inkbird to come on at 80 degrees and it did a good job last summer. Blowing across a reefer 170 and dead quiet. The only time noise got noticeable was when the blades got dirty and once I blew them off it was silent again.

I'm not happy with any of the cooling fans in the reef aquarium hobby. None of them are properly rated for water contact (even spray) and especially not for salt exposure. I have had many ice cap fans fail, and when I take them apart to see what failed, its always corrosion.

I am looking at building my own rack and using these fans instead:

They are rated for direct water immersion (temporary) and dust. They should perform better with the resulting salt spray. They are also 24vdc, so I can run them off Apex 1Link module and skip the transformer/wallwart. A single fan will do 109 cfm. At 12v, it will do about/little more than 50%.

Also, the airflow on the hood units is incredibly low, requiring you to have more fans to do the job.

Noise is on the higher side, the larger frame fan runs at a lower speed/sound but same voltages and air flow.

I just had to LOL when reading the description,

We recommend they be mounted in an area away from excessive humidity, condensation, and/or excessive splashing. Placing the PropellerBreeze in an area with high salt content such as in enclosed cabinets should also be avoided.

Maybe someone should let them know, if these are supposed to be designed for use to cool an aquarium(you know that big glass box SALT WATER), that they will be around excess humidity and/or splashing, and/or in an area with high salt content.

I’ve had mine over 2 years with plenty of splashes, and they are working fine. Lots of air flow and relatively quiet. Not sure what that disclaimer is all about...

I have the same 4 fan version I bought off ebay. The tank this is used on is in my small workshop that also houses the furnace so the temp fluctuates quite a bit, no complaints so far. The real test will be during the summer when the room temp gets into the 80's.

How effective are appropriately sized fans, generally? My house got up to 72 yesterday and the tank temp made it to 80 or 81. I was really surprised I'm already having to worry about cooling. I assumed the house would have to be high 70's before any issue. Will be my first spring/summer with a tank.

Surprisingly effective. My fans can keep my tank under 80 even if ambient gets into the mid 80s. I haven’t pushed it to its limit yet. You’ll need to refill your ato more often though...

Hey im about to buy the 3 fan version of the BOYU. Do you think it can keep 25 gallons cool if the room temp doesnt get too hot? I fogure for 21$ its worth a shot...

As long as humidity isn’t too high, I’d imagine you get a few degrees cooler than ambient at least. Just make sure you keep an eye on water level or have an ATO. Water will evaporate fast and in a 25 gallon, could cause a bigger than normal salinity swing if you aren’t on top of it.

I am looking for something that I can drop in the sump for cooling. I see the drop-in chillers, but need something not too big.

I ended up buying one of those cheap fans off ebay. It's coming in the mail today actually.

The thermoelectric aquarium chiller which you linked crossed my mind as well. Did more research on it, and you'd have to either drill your tank or make some sort of stand which keeps it in its correct position. I know some put these guys in HOB filters.

I just ended up buying this guy down here. They gave me a $5 coupon so ended up for $18.99 for a 4 fan. I looked at the Tunze fan, some others, but couldn't justify spending $60-$80 on one which folks said go bad pretty quickly due to corrosion. The fan below should decrease my tank temp by 2-3 degrees which is all I need.
