I am going to be culturing my own phytoplankton, and copepods in the future. I have done extensive research on this subject and have found some information on it that I would like to share. This is just a collection of my thoughts on Pod growing and not intended to offend anyone on how they grow their pods.
First off I would like to talk about the types of phyto I am going to be growing and why.
Nannochloropsis sp. - I know a lot of people that use Nann. to feed their copepod culture and have success in raising copepods. But I have read that Nann. has a hard outer shell and copepods have a hard time digesting them. This does not mean that Nann. is not a good phyto to culture and feed your copepods, because they eat detritus and can keep the water in your pod culture cleaner.
Isochrysis sp. - I will be using this to feed my copepods.
Tetraselmis - I will be using this in combination with Iso. to feed the copepods.
The type of copepods I was thinking of growing are Tisbe, Tigriopus sp, or Nitokra lacustris. I have heard that all of the species are easy to culture and that mandarins will feed on them. I am just trying to find the most nutritious type of copepod to feed my fish.
What do you guys think? Am I on the right path or do I need to change some things?
