Copper in a reef aquarium discussion.

I think everyone would agree that the quality, composition and consistency of the salt we use is critical to successfully maintaining healthy systems. The same is true for the water, supplements, media and food we employ.


I for one don't doubt for a moment that there are companies in this industry that do a poor job auditing their quality and that from time to time, even some of the better known companies, put out contaminated or downright deadly product.


A recent regrettable example was the recall of carbon contaminated with copper and other metals this past spring. While this particular company owned up to the mistake, you have to wonder how often this actually happens. I know I've encountered suspect additives which seemed to have unexpected negative effects and the odd lot of salt which didn't mix properly or had levels way out of range. Usually its alk or calcium, but if these are out of range and the manufacturer didn't catch it, then IMO, the same variability likely exists in other aspects of the mix as well.


With this said however, I have not ever personally encountered salt which I suspected of having copper levels elevated to the ranges indicated in your post, nor do I know of anyone who has. Maybe I've been lucky, or maybe things have improved since the studies leading to the s-15 report were conducted.


I'm aware of some of the controversy surrounding this report and I find most of the criticisms unsubstantiated, unfounded and unfortunate. Speaking for myself, I find little wrong with it except it's age. It is my understanding that the tests were conducted in the early 1990's and are now 20years old. I also see nothing wrong with the inland report, except again, its age. Its now ten years old.


I believe the s-15 reports demonstrates the state of salt manufacture at the time it was completed. I have no reason to doubt it. I also think things have come a long way in 20 years, if for no other reason, than the Internet. Manufacturers know that any defect such as the Cu levels you cite would destroy their product reputation in the marketplace over night.


Do I believe all the stats on my bucketof salt? No, and I'll keep that little piece of poly-filter floating around in my mixing tub just in case.


Do I think that copper build up totoxic levels in our systems? Yes, but I think its less a function of the levels in the salt and more a function of inappropriate substrate. We continually pour copper in minute amounts into our tanks and it doesn't stay in the water. Its built into the precipitates, rock andsand. Why would I suspect this? Oolitic sands - precipitated in pristine environments contain Cu at the levels approaching 40ppm -40,000ppb! If it can achieve these levels with the Cu concentration found in NSW - I wonder how high it can get in the substrate of our tanks with the levels of Cu in our salt mixes and additives?

Copper can be held in various substrates and/or decorations. However, accumulated copper can release into the aquarium at lethal levels depending on pH. If Cu was present in pristine natural sea water or marine aquarium water at 40 ppm. Few if any invertebrates would survive.

As for the S-15 Report, I stated that it was dated. I also said IMO some salts tested are today lower in over all quality or integrity.

Without question the advent of the internet has allow many interested aquarists to ask questions, post results of their home tests, etc. At the same time, we are seeing high levels of Cu being reported in some brands of freshly mixed salt water. IMO, these brands might have lost some reputation. However these brands are still popular because they are sold at a low price. E.g. The aquarium business is very forgiving, if the price is cheap.

No doubt Cu and other heavy metals can enter our aquariums via marine salts, foods, contact with some chemical filter material, etc. However when the average marine aquarium keeper can test for copper in freshly mixed marine salts and find levels from 0.15 ppm.+, this more than suggests that some brands of marine salts are made with low grade ingredients that are contaminated with metals far in excess of more costly (proper) ingredients.

The Inland "study" was far from anything remotely scientific. E.g. a) These fellows mixed different packages of salts together to get an average because they could not afford testing individual samples. b) Mixing salts in the back room of a retail shop, then sending out to a lab. of their choice. No regard for mixing chemistry in a "clean room" or under the supervision of a qualified technician. c) No PhD or lab. tech signed off their study. d) Posting their results on the internet, then shutting down their shop shortly there after.

What was most curious was the fact that these guys openly solicited money from hobbyists to fund their project. They were not able to secure enough funding to have a more credible test performed. They used donated money and provided less than promised results. This was all over the internet at the time the test was offered by many that sent them money. IMO the Inland study was simply one more internet rash that did not do anyone any good.

I find this less than junk science. -- Perhaps Aqua Craft Products takes the actual science of chemistry too serious? We test each batch of raw materials. If we receive raw materials that do not meet our specifications, we sell them to wholesale chemical suppliers. We test each batch of finished product we produce. We use the marine salts we produce in systems with delicate marine organisms. Anywhere along the production line, if we have unanswered questions, we send samples out to one or two independent labs for additional information.

In any event, we are all here on R2R to ask questions, hopefully get meaningful answers. expand our horizons and enjoy our hobby investment.

What I indicated was that even with the extremely low levels of Cu in NSW - precipitates formed in that water can concentrate the Cu ions to the extent that the precipitate itself will test as high as 40ppm. I suspect the same precipitates form in our systems and can as you point out release their deadly cargo of copper with a sufficient swing in pH.

I'm not sufficiently familiar with how the inland study was funded -how study material was collected or handled. I take it at face value. I read many many studies - peer reviewed and not. It is very difficult sometimes. even with the best, not to extrapolate or read more into the study than was presented. As far as the solicitation of funds from the community - I would support such an endeavor and don't see that as necessarily impeaching the credibility of the results.

Perhaps the most important take-away from this exchange. Had the company who distributed the contaminated carbon adopted this philosophy of incoming material and finished product inspection, their product would not be on my list of those avoid at all cost. It may have been a one time event, but I won't purchase their line again. Its clear they do little other than re-package and add their mark-up. With sub-standard and even counterfeit material flooding in from distributors overseas. its good to hear you take this seriously.

Here is an update on my issue. I bought a copper test kit and tested water which told me I had copper in my tank. I bought chemi-pure and a filter sock to add to my aquarium. This must be the issue with my browning corals and eventual deaths of all of my coral. I hope I caught it in time and the remaining coral thrieve because I was about to pull the plug and get out of the hobby.
 
Most synthetic salts contain copper higher than the ocean levels 0.001 ppm, usually higher than .015 ppm is found in synthetic salts, my personal opinion is that sometimes is much higher than that, it may also be a reason for those perfect parameter sps loses. Testing for copper accurately at low levels may be impossible without using very expensive equipment. So I am looking for solutions :) after reading many articles Seachemcopisorb may be a potential solution to the problem. I want to hear from those that had issues and those that have experience using this product.

Water changes are necessary. Water changes reduce accumulated waste ions. Water changes replenish elements used by the biological filter as well as metabolized by our captive marine pets. A decent marine salt will "recharge" the closed system with high quality fresh salt water that is ionically balanced.

There are several brands of marine salts that vary in copper content from batch to batch. Levels of Cu in these brands can range from: 0.15 ppm to 0.24 ppm. (0.15 ppm. of Cu is the treatment dose required to cure ich. 0.15 ppm. or more of Cu can kill sensitive invertebrates.) These same brands, from time to time can test for ammonia at 0.25 ppm or more.

There has been enough discussion on various marine aquarium web sites that detail the brand names of these offending marine salts in the last few years. As one might think, these brands should be avoided.

As speculated by others, using various chemical filters in an effort to lessen the water change routine can actually cause negative chemical shifts within the marine aquarium. E.g. Some chemical filter(s) can bind heavy metals. If pH drops, accumulated copper can be released into the marine aquarium.

The KEY is to use a decent marine salt. And perform regular water changes.

A decent marine salt will not add: copper, other heavy metals, ammonia, silicates etc.

I.e. We have one commercial customer with dozens of aquariums totaling an 8000 gallon system. They change 150 gallons of salt water each week. They employ a variety of chemical filter mediums. At the same time they are adding various supplements to replenish ions removed by the chemical filter mediums.

After a quick look at how this customer maintains their aquariums, it was evident they are "running on the fly". E.g. No clue as to the ionic content of all 78 elements found in NSW. They simply test for Ca, Mg, Alk, No2, No3, NH4. When nitrate increases, they added more "nitrate" resin. If water turns yellow, they added more carbon. Then added a bevy of liquid and powder supplements.

For some months their fish and corals looked very good. Then the inevitable occurred. Their fish continued to look good. (They keep fish for an average of 1-3 weeks prior to sale then restocking). However costly corals that were for sale / on display for over 6-8 weeks began to appear in poor health. Large or show pieces of very costly corals that were kept for over 2 months began to die off.

The owner refused to acknowledge the possibility that various chemical filters were actually releasing accumulated metals. This shop uses and promotes the approach of chemical filtration and supplementation vs. simple water changes.

When testing for copper it is essential to use a copper test kit that will not give false positive test results if other attributing factors are in play.

When using a marine salt it is essential to use a brand that does not contain elements in dramatically disproportionate amounts (vs. NSW) that can give false positive test results with some brands of copper test kits.

None of the current commercial mixes have problematic levels of copper (as would be the case if the post you quoted were true. It isn't.

I don’t think that level is a problem, but can’t know for sure. I had 2-3 times that level in my tank once and I didn’t think it an apparent issue.

That said, it is certainly a good plan to be sure there are no metal parts in the water, pennies tossed in by a kid, broken heaters, etc. using cuprisorb or metasorb are also a fine plan.

Unless im reading the study posted above - none of the tested salts had higher than .03 ppm copper (on average). Where are you finding that most synthetic (or some synthetic) salts contain .15 ppm or even more?
 
Can you post the level and what it is for (new water, reef tan, etc). I cannot download those docs on my phone.
