So I have a 75 gallon tank with 15gallon sump. I have never used copper in or around my tank, after numerous invertebrates died on me I had my LFS test for copper and sure enough it was in my tank somehow. I do have kids so I took out all of my rock and searches the sand for pennies or any other type of metal and found nothing. After talking to my LFS we assume that the live rock I got must have been. I'm a tank with copper in it. I got it from A different LFS. About 2 weeks ago I replace all of my live rock with new live rock and added cuprisorb. Yesterday I had the water tested again and it is down from around 4.0 to between 1.0 and .50. So my question is will I ever get all of this copper out so I can get a CUC and eventually have coral or do I have to start all over?

Yikes! Sorry you’re going through that. I don’t have any ideas other than cycling it in a barrel for a few months with lots of cuprisorb and letting it sit for a solid month or two after you start reading zero copper.

Any sand in the tank that could have been absorbing the copper that was leeching from the old rock? No idea on if it can be fixed though :( You made a rapid drop though, so hunting down other materials that could absorb it, clean as many surfaces that it could stick to, keep running the cuprisorb, water changes, and keep testing.

Are you using RO/DI, and if not had your tap water tested?

I am using R.o./D.I. and have been since the being. Thank you

I think I might replace the sand next

You may need to refresh that cuprazorb and continue to run it until it is zero'd out. Run it another 2 weeks after you have tested zero, this should absorb anything that may be leaching. I then run a poly filter to make sure even if my copper test zero, the poly filter will develop a blue tinge even if there is residual copper left. Leave that poly filter in to see if your copper source has been completely eliminated.

I treated many of tanks with copper and have successfully removed all traces of copper. These tanks have been successful as reefs and with inverts. So unless you some sort phantom copper supply, you will eventually be rid of it.
