So my copper level was .49 on my hanna checker I then went with triton detox and got the copper level down to .4 now I just retested and it is at .54. Tank has been up and running for over 6 months

Did you once-upon-a-time dose copper? Or otherwise know source of your copper?

If you are asking what might be causing your copper reading, then check your source water just to rule out it hasn't come in from external source water.

You say tank running for 6 months, but you don't say that it is new tank - if you bought it used and has used pumps, perhaps there is source.

This is crazy sounding, but if you have kids, make sure they didn't drop handful of change into your sump, including copper pennies. Back WAY before me, according to @Paul B awesome (and funny) book, they used to do copper treatment WITH pennies. Also one of our Frag Swap coral vendors said years back someone sabotaged their aquaculture tanks with penny(pennies) so they no longer offer tours.

Finally, if your rocks had been used in QT with copper at some past point, they may always leach copper. I'm always skittish about using someone's "used" rocks if I don't know providence because I don't know what those rocks might bring.

In fact, I just started a new tank, and because of pests I've had, I KNEW I didn't want rocks out of my existing tank or supplies (sad but true).

The Hanna copper checker seems to not be useful for verifying low copper. It seems to not read the low end accurately. I’d use it just for medication.

If you are still worried about copper, I’d get a quality icp (not all are equal).

Try mixing up some fresh seawater with RODI and test it. If it reads high then blame the Hanna. If it reads zero, something may be wrong in the tank.
