Hi I have a qt setup I bought some copper just incase I need to treat any new fish. The box says copper sulphate and formaldehyde. Any ideas on test kit and treatment levels?
Thanks in advance.

  • Cuprion (0.20 ppm) - Seachem or Salifert copper test kit
  • Cupramine (0.35 - 0.5 ppm) - Seachem or Salifert copper test kit
  • Coppersafe (1.5 - 2.0 ppm) - API copper test kit
  • Kordon Copper Aid (1.5 - 2.0 ppm) - API copper test kit
  • Copper Power (2.5 ppm) - API copper test kit

Thank you for your reply the copper is aqua care. No advice from lfs and instructions not very clear.

What is the brand name of the product? I need to do some homework on this one. I don't know what role the formaldehyde plays. It could be a stabilizer for an ionic copper or a chaelating product. Or it could be there for other reasons entirely. Just not something I am familiar with.

Hi, it's an aqua care branded product. The instructions are hard to understand and no advice given from lfs. Thanks

Aqua care must be kept at levels around .15 to .20ppm to be effective. The API kit should suffice:)

I usually keep copper at the high range, because it can swing down and up and I want to ensure it never drops. If it drops, the 30 day clock restarts.

If those levels are correct then isn't it an ionic copper product and need the Salifert or Red Sea test kit? API is for chaelated copper.

It doesn't really specify. This is the ingredient list, but it doesn't say whether it's ionic or chaelated. So it's possible. You're more of an expert than me so id go with the salefert test kit then:)
  • Deionised water
  • Copper Sulphate
  • Copper concentration approx. 20,000ppm

I couldn't find much on the product but I do believe it is ionic (most copper sulphate products are) so the range you give should be correct. The formaldaheyde confused me though. I would go with Salifert or Seachem.

Edit: Sorry.. I'm doing water testing right now and have Redsea on the brain. Corrected to say Seachem, not Redsea.

Is this the product? https://www.thetechden.com.au/Ultimate_Aquacare_Copper_Treatment_250ml_p/coptrel250.htm

The therapeutic range (0.15-0.20ppm) suggests this contains copper sulfate pentahydrate and that can only be accurately measured using a professional grade test kit: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/copper-test-kits.257924/

If this product does contain formaldehyde, it is probably just a small amount that is used as an activator.
This is the one I have. https://www.fishkeeper.co.uk/product/aquacare-marine-anti-parasite-100ml

So is it 14 days in copper or 30 ?
It is 14 days if you can transfer them to a clean, sterilized tank. If you need to leave them in the same tank after the treatment then it needs to be 30 days.

Ok so you are saying I can’t leave them in the tank for observation after 14 day’s even if I do water changes and take out copper ?

Correct.

There will be parasites encysted onto the walls of the tank, the filter, any decorations ... any hard surface. 30 days in copper will take those out, but 14 days will leave them dangerously viable. Remove the copper and they'll hatch to infect your fish.

Thank you for the info. Now I need to decide what’s my next move trust the 14 days or go 30 or setup an observation tank man decisions... decisions....decisions
