Copperband Butterfly Fish with bruise?

I have a CBF in quarantine with a Flame Angel for the last week. They have both been eating frozen Mysis since introduction. My normal QT process would be 1 week observation, 1 week prazipro, 3 weeks cupramine, 1 week prazipro, final 1 week observation.

Two days ago the CBF began minor flashing on his head, which now looks a little bit off. Can’t be more specific except to say that it doesn’t look like “normal” ich. More like he has a slightly out of focus area on the white part of his body. Sorry, no pic of this.

Also, starting two days ago, I noticed what I can only describe as a bruise on his flank.

Can anyone help me diagnose this? I started the Prazipro this morning, and have not seen any aggression between him and the Flame Angel. Thanks!

Not to sure when you got him, how he was transported, how he was caught, (wild,LFS, or your own tank) but these slender fish are extremely prone to bruising and damage to their internal organs. This might be one of those cases where you just have to wait it out. Also I am no biologist but where that is looks like the top 7/8 of the mark is above any internal organ.

That is not a bruise due to trauma that is a bacterial infection. Probably Vibrio or possibly Uronema.

+1 on the bacterial infection. CBBs are very prone to this condition. You will have to work fast to save the fish. I have to be honest the prognosis is grim with CBBs once these red sores appear. Nitrofurancine Green powder is very effective on butterflies with this condition; or the trifecta of Kanaplex, Metroplex and Furan2 is also a good pathway. Antibiotics are very slow acting on fish. Time is your enemy here. The bacterial infection effects both the organs and apparently the blood in CBBs. Thus is spreads rapidly.

Sorry for your loss. Beautiful fish. If you try another CBB, the nitrofuracine green could be use prophylactically to help prevent the red sore/bacterial infection from gaining a foothold.

Happen to me. The first CBB I put into QT developed that bruise (infection) on the second day and was gone by the third, they succumb to infections very quickly. With the second one I started him off with antibiotics on day one in the QT.
