Coral above water line

How harmful is it to mount coral SPS or LPS at a height that puts them in air during water changes. Would never be more then maybe 10 minutes I would guess.

not a problem with sps and zoas…
there are high and low tides
and these corals get exposed on reefs.


torches and some lps can be an issue,
since they aren’t exposed like this in reefs.
(barring storms i suppose)

that said, i sometimes have to do a larger wc
than i intended…
torches sometimes hang down (not good)
but i’ve had no adverse effects

fleshier lps like scolys, meats, acans and bowerbankis stay underwater

quite a few of my corals(sps) get exposed for a few minutes during large waterchanges. I bet some torches and acans or any soft tissue corals on rock razor blades may have trouble under their own weight with now water.

what corals are getting exposed?

It doesn't hurt to splash a little water on them every now and then

I’m assuming all of them have been out of the water at some point, probably more.

Yes. I change 30 gallons of this 75 gallon tank once a month.

This question actually arose while my wife and I were talking about future placements in my biocube. A normal water change does expose some rock and I have shied away from mounting on top but maybe time for a few SPS up there now.

These acro and montipora digitata are this far out of the water for 15 minutes every feeding, and for 60 minutes a couple times a week when I feed Reef Roids. Everything within 6 inches of the top is high and dry for 30-45 minutes during water changes with no issues. All acros, birds eats, and monti digi though.

Good info given in here! I concur that SPS (and most other coral) won't have a problem. Done of the fleshier varieties would likely be more affected, but even those usually do OK if it's not a frequent occurrence.
