Hey all, I’m a fairly new reefer and wanted to ask about coral placement. I’ve read of corals being aggressive and releasing toxins when placed together. I’ve seen small bio cubes packed with corals in really close proximity. Is there only certain types that can’t be close? like leathers, torches etc my apologies if this has been addressed before. TIA

Corals definitely are aggressive, there's limited space on the reef so they use different tactics to compete with each other over the limited real estate. With regard to things like toxins, people usually run activated carbon to remove it from the water. Chemical warfare is a tactic that is used by soft corals so this should be taken into consideration if keeping them.

A lot of LPS are able to sting so you have to be careful with placement on these. They can usually be kept with their own species so you may work around the space issue by keeping multiple of the same species in an area, like making a garden of torches or hammers.

Sps can be very delicate so care should be taken to make sure that they are not being stung.

Best advice I can give is do some research on any coral before you buy. This will give you the best chances of a packed tank. Make sure you consider compatibility between species along with light and flow requirements and you you will be on your way to a wall to wall reef.

Thank you for all the info. Will do research and check compatibility

As already stated, I keep all my hammers, frogspawn, and octospawns touching each other in a garden. I reccomend seperating the torches, yes they can touch, but it stresses them out constantly. As of zoas they can touch and be happy. Acans can touch, but I recommend giving them space to grow. If you plan on buying a anemone, buy it first, and let it settle, then place your corals around it. I let softies have room between each other, just in case you know? In good time they will grow and touch and that’s when you can frag!

Thanks for the tips. I have about 9 corals atm everyone in their own space since my tank is 65g so plenty of room for now
