What's up guys, I was in my LFS recently and they were talking about the grading system of the corals their divers use. It really intrigued me and I was wondering if anyone might know more about how they grade certain corals? It seemed really interesting, so if you have any knowledge about coral grading I would be interested to hear about it!

It used to be due to colour. For instance with scolys a master scolymia had four colours, ultra 3, grade a 2 and so on (or along those lines, i never paid much attention) but I don't think it actually works like that anymore because vendors make their own rules. I've seen people selling different grades of fish which is just cashing in on ignorance imo and I'm not one for named corals other than their scientific names.

So basically it starts with colours, shape or size for collectors but as soon as they hit the vendor all bets are off and you just call it what you like.
