Coral growing contest!!!

How about we start from fresh frags. Include pics of size And/or polyp count, give a set amount of time for contest and require weekly updates and pics of progression.

I'm in as well and this method has my vote.

I would say at least a 1 month run at it just to give each category a fair run at it.

When will it start? I think these are great ideas! Or do a category for mariculture colonies!

Break it into categories for each coral ( SPS, LPS, Softies, Etc....(NPS)). Maybe do softies as a Zoa/Paly category, And Lps sub category like Euphyllia (frogspawn, octospawn, hammers, torchs ETC...) . kinda see how its being broken up?

I think there should be an effort to make sure it's current growth, not old pictures of previous growth. And, I think once the contest starts and a certain number of entries are made, it should be closed, with a distinct set of participants, a set duration and require posting at certain intervals. It seems to me, jumping in the midst of a contest like this, would not be apples-to-apples. Maybe each contestant should have a thread in a specific forum, so the progression shots for a specific piece/contestant are all together and growth is easily discerned - set image sizes in pixles, and some frame of reference for scale. Just ideas.....

Yes we could do like some of our old contest and have participants use the flash card trick where you have to post date, S/N, and Category for each progression pic.

I would think we could have 3 categories, you choose which one(s) you want to be in, and somebody leads a group buy of a colony and frags it up, then ships it out when things are healed up, have it run for anywhere from 1-3 months, upload a screenshot of the timestamp from the computer that you are on with a picture preview on the screen. I think this sounds like fun but IMO the contestants should all attempt to grow out the same type of coral for example if you enter for Lps and choose a zoa some zoAs grow quicker then others like Rastas or gow, compared to someone trying to growout a orange mandarin or poinsetta. If there are 10 folks doing zoAs the zoa should be the same across the board I'd say start with a 2p frag current pic and let the games begin the same for sps. I hope I explained myself well and you folks understand what I am trying to get across. None the less great way to spice up the forum Rev I'm sure this will be fun to see how peoples tanks grow some of these frags out

we kind of tried this with sps about two years ago. it was pretty organized at first and i cut up a large aussie colony and sent free frags to anyone who wanted in. this was the inital thread

well after a week or two at most the posts stopped and that was that. totally fizzled. enthusisam was really high at first but i thinbk it was just too much work for people at the end of the day.

still like the idea though and would love to see it happen again.

Even certain chalice grow trice as fast as others along with every other species. What's the plan for this? For a contest it would almost have to come from the same colony right? I can't wait for this to take place. Looks like fun.

The way we run coral growing contest in the slash club is pretty easy. One member donates frags of the same coral to the contestants. Pics are posted of the frags monthly from start to finish. Ours go for 6 months or so.
