Well to start out I think way to many corals are taken from the ocean andnot even used in the trade as live corals. Someone posted the other day of hugecolonies lying on a beach waiting to be bleached out and so as ornaments. Thisreally hurts to see as our reefs around the world are already hurting fromeverything we have done to them. Here is a little I do in my tank and what I dowith them after it.
In our club we run a co-op program and it is a member’s only benefit and wehave had it revamped a few months back and have over 90 corals in it right now.I have put quite a few into it and more are Zoas and Acans but have some SPS onthe frag racks waiting to cover the plugs then they will go into the program.
Now a little bit about my tank: I own a 90g long that is mainly SPS withzoas, and some LPS in there. I have a 40g breeder as my sump/fuge that has 5different macros in there with about a 8: DSB. Running 2x 48" VHO atitnicsand 2 x 250w MH 14k Phoenix bulbs with LED supplements over the middle of thetank.
I have a breeding pair of A. Ocellaris Darwin Black clowns in there with a Shermannem as their home. I am on week six with a clutch of fry from them that areobtaining their tail stripe now. They are eating TDO-B1. I also keep a pair ofmating Bangii Cardnels and the male is carrying the eggs as of yesterday. Ialso have a Scopas Tang, Yellow Tang, ORA target mandarin, Diamond sand siftinggoby, Black Lace Blenny, a Pink and a Blue Tuxedo urchin along with a longspine urchin.
As for my corals I have 28 different types of Zoanthiads, 35 Different SPSranging from Birds nest to Cats paws, to Montis and everything in between. WithLPS I have 21 different ones in there such as Ultra Pink Rainbow acans to awall hammer to branching Lobos and on and on. I also have 5 different chaliceswith a few mini carpet nems in there that I received from the co-op program asone. They get no bigger than a quarter and when they reach that size they willsplit. Also have Duncan’s and dendros. It is just a really mixed Reef tank. Iam not really stuck on the names of the corals as some are and I just like thecolors of the coral and try and match the names as best I can to give someonewho is stuck on having a certain coral in there tank for whatever reason. I knowthat with this program is should not matter what it is called unless you aretrying to resell it at a later time but that is not allowed in this program.
With all my corals I have mainly fragged up my Zoas as stated in the beginningand have added over 30 frags to the co-op program and they are basic ones suchas blow pops to CAR's and Magicians. I am letting some of the higher end onesgrow out a little more before I place them in there. I will frag them and itseems to promote the growth of them such as my Magicians. I bought three headsfrom one of the LFS here in the area and have fragged off of the disk four goodsize frags with I would say close to 20 plus heads among them. I then dip themin a solution of iodine for about 5 to 10 minutes to help them in the healingprocess. After I am through fragging what I am going to donate I will take themback to the tank and place them on the frag rack where they will hang out forthe next two weeks to heal. I take them to the meeting and they are posted onour forums to where other members can see a picture of them and offer to sponsorthe coral till it is ready to be propagated and sent back into the co-op.
With this program if you take one of the co-op corals you are saying thatyou have a good setup and are willing to take all that coral and care for itand deliver a coral back into the program and cannot sell the corals. If you doyou will no longer be allowed to be a sponsor in the co-op program and loseyour selling privileges on the forums. Along with that you also will give thesaid coral back if you break your tank down.
The person who has revamped the co-op program will hold the corals at hishouse and bring the corals to the meeting that are going to be picked up andkeeps a database of who donated it and who is sponsoring it and who has donatedsuch coral back so you can follow along and see where and what it has done.
I love this program so much to know that it is not making a huge dent in thecollection of wild corals but it might be helping slow it down just a bit andif everyone were to donate something around the world and get a program likethis started in their own club think what kind of effect that might have.
