I forget the "correct" name but I've heard these tubes can be difficult to maintain. Anyway, just curious how I know when/if to toss them. Two (back row) of them still come out sometimes, and others have the fleshy bulb intact but that stringy-algea-like mess has me pessimistic about odds of survival.

The algae is a symptom of potential water issues. What are your water parameters and how new is your tank? Also pictures of he entire tank would be helpful.

2 stars, a hammer, several crabs, mollies, snails, and a royal in my 6month old 40g; All are thriving; parameters are good with nitrate still fluctuating a bit as I am still transitioning from flakes to pellets; 10g weekly H2O
