So I’ve bought a couple of corals this last week and I have a couple of questions. Question 1 the hammer. It’s pretty happy except one head is a bit cranky. After a feed today I took a photo and zoomed in and found some algae? I wonder if it is what is making this one head cranky and how I should remove it if so. I have already removed one small aptasia from the stem of the same head…. Question 2 is does the acan look happy it changes so much throughout the day. I also believe I may have some zoa hitchhikers on the base of my hammer maybe zooming in is overkill but hey…

Aiptasia and algae could definitely be what’s bugging one head and not the others. Or another coral too close and is just effecting the one head so far. Or a fish or something bugging it. How long have those pieces been in the tank? Could be just getting used to the new tank too.

Just the one head. It’s been in for around 4 days. It’s probably just being temperamental it’s been fine until this afternoon. I spot fed this morning. Maybe it’s still digesting? It sits in a corner. I wonder weather it may be getting more flow. The only corals near it are the other two heads and my clowns don’t come out of the opposite end of the tank would using the baster be to much. Could also be slightly high flow in the corner?

Which of three heads is retracted. In the new pic it looks happy. If it’s the head on the right I’d say it’s a little close to the sand and that might get it to retract. As far as removing the algae just pull it off. You can brush your finger around the head to get it to retract to get better access if you can’t get to it easily. My bet is either just getting used to the tank, algae or aiptasia bugging it, or just normal behavior, if it extends and retracts from time to time then no biggie. If it stays retracted for a day or two more and the other two are good then it may be from irritation from something like algae or flow or something. Honestly they just take a minute to adjust to new tanks sometimes so that may just be it too. Let us know how it looks tomorrow. The acans look good by the way. Very cool colors.

Thanks for the tip! Yes I really do think it’s being temperamental. I did think maybe the sand is making it not want to open right up.
