Not a mushroom but looks like some type of leather coral

SOmetimes they extend their polyps, and other times they don't. Generally when they are happy and feeding the polyps will be out on a leather.

They gave him to me for free it had a gsp attached to it growing that's how it looked

Yes they do. Yours would be happier attatched to something and up higher in the flow...

Leathers will attach if you can wedge him into a crevice. Some people use a rubberband to hold them in place. They get big, so leave him lots of room. Nice score for free!
