I received a donation of a whole bunch of corals for my classroom reef from a student's dad who was breaking down his tank. One of them is a mystery to me. I have never seen it before and can't seem to find anything like it for sale online.

Does anyone know what kind of coral this is?

I have no idea, but I love it!

where's Jake Adam’s when you need him!?!

I’m following along hopefully someone knows- I would love to Find a Frag of that!

Hard to say to me it looks like a Indo curvey elegance that is not fully out yet. That is a guess btw

Can you take a picture of base?
I'd have to go into my classroom for another picture. It could be a couple of days. If you zoom in on the top picture you can see a little bit of skeleton on the edges and underneath the coral on the right side. It looks like an encrusting growth form.

Marine Bio and Chem.

It seems it has been a really long time since I took a picture of the whole tank. It's a reef modified for seahorses with cooler temps and regions of varied lighting and flow.

This is from the low-light, and moderate, laminar flow region

Rotating water deflectors on the return mimic wave action for the sps on the "reef crest" area. This side of the tank gets bright light, just not in this picture.

Found a whole-tank shot.

Im probably going to get a lot of heat here. That coral is probably from the Caribbeans. Only coral I can think of with that look happens to be Mycetophyllia. There's not a lot of close ups of these coral.

Edit: other guess is hydnophora.

No, mycetophyllia looks more like a cross between a lobophyllia (former symphyllia) and a chalice.

What color/s is it under white or slightly blue light?

These are 2 of the types of hydno I have... I know it comes in other forms so the OP's piece certainly may be the same kind of coral...

Thanks for all your replies. I got a look at the skeleton because it started to recede due to some crazy alkalinity swings in my 10 gallon qt that was all of a sudden filled with tons of coral. It's definitely Hydnophora. It has the characteristic "horns" where the corallites meet.
