Hi all,

I picked up this beauty for a pretty reasonable price yesterday. It was sold to me as a Trachy, but I’m not 100% sure.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Green Wilsoni . . . . or AKA Dented brain coral

I’m actually thinking that might be a green wellsophyllia

Looks similar in shape to my yellow/blue wellso...

It is 100% not a wilsoni. It's either Wellsophyllia radiata or Trachyphyllia geoffroyi, and I'm leaning towards the latter.
I mentioned dented brain ,.. . . which is a Wellsophyllia radiata

I thought the classification of wellsophyllia was removed? Am I misunderstanding Than here?

The main difference that has me leaning towards wilsoni is that it has segmented pieces, not one long rim as I see in most examples of trachys/wellsos.

It’s not a wilsoni. Wilsoni does not have that flesh texture and a different skeleton pattern.

So, I don’t think you’re necessarily wrong, but every trachy I see has large, contiguous polyps. This has lots of segmented polyps, which looks more like the wilsonis I see.

I’d be happy to know it’s not a Wilsoni, as they seem to be incredibly hard to keep long term from what I read.

I’ll try to get a pic of it a bit more closed up today so you can really see what I mean about the segmentation.

Regarding wellso, from what I’ve heard (and in the Tidal Gardens video) that is no longer a classification. So, it would be a type of trachy.

I guess it could be a trachyphyllia geoffroyi. It just seems more randomly segmented than the ones I see pictures of.

Perhaps a top-down picture or another angle can give us definitive answer. Either way, nice coral!
