I need help with identifying and diagnosing a small coral mat.
Tank data:
- 75g, 6 months old, 79F, 1.025 sg, 100lb rock, 10 fish, 70 cleaning crew, 4/3/2/1 months old corals, all doing fine except this one
- 0 phosphates, <5 nitrates, 0 ammonia, 8.0 ph
- 2x50W ReefLED 50W, have been set at 60%, then 65%, now mostly at 75%, about 6 in above tank
- 2x sinularias, 1x palythoa colony (about 20 polyps), featherduster, green goniopora, florida ricordea - all doing fine, with sinularia and paly growing steadily
- 1 reef octopus 110 used for aeration mostly, not set up to fully work as skimmer at the moment
- water circ. estimated 10 times recirc per hour with sump pump; 15 times turnover with internal powerhead (total 25 times)

Coral mat:
- purchased about 6 weeks ago from Petco (a really good Petco in saltwater section, really passionate personnel)
- mat about 1x1 inches (photo in the next post), polyps about half inch extended, now are closed
- brought it home, placed it in the shadows, had some polyps extending for 1-2 weeks
- after approx 2 weeks, some polyps opening, not extending, rest of them closed
- last 3-5 days, all polyps closed

Please help with identification and advice. I really like the coral mat, I don't want the last colony of colorful zoanthids purchased a week ago to end up like this mat and I also want to save this mat.

Thanks.

Any thoughts?

Here's the only one I got:

I could give it a nice coral dip bath if you think that might help...

What should I do to help it open up? I am out of ideas. Water parameters seem fine, light I tried 3 locations so far...

How long have you had it? Have you seen the polyps open? What do they look like?

Figuring out the species can help us determine whats ticking it off, its possible it just needs more time to acclimate to your lighting, it can take more than a week or two for that to happen.

They really look like zoas, I will try to find a matching photo on the web.

It could be a type of sea mat. I had Palythoa tuberculosa for a few years. Cool species although they're highly toxic. Polyps on that species were much larger than what you've described. Have you tried feeding it? Mine definitely did better with feeding.

Thats half the battle then! Unfortunately this isn't a species that I have any experience with so I can't really comment on the care although I know they can be kind of finicky. Here is a great care video though.

Well. lesson learned I guess. I gave it a 10 minute bath, went on to feeding a few hours later, I will try for a few days, but I don't have any hopes for it. I will still take care of it as much as I can until it turns white.

Well, I guess I got some good news, it seems the polyps are showing up a bit, hopefully it will get better.

In general, gonipora sp are one of the more difficult corals to maintain. Personally, I've had exactly 0 luck and probably won't try again.

Understood, I wish I knew more when I purchased it, anyways the price, beauty and buy impulse made me go for it. Anyways, I will do my best to keep it going.
