Hi, all. Have had a 32gal FOWLR tank for a bit over a year and now setting up an IM SR-60 from a wonderful R2R hobbyist.
As part of the used tank purchase we received a couple little sprigs of coral--we were too dumb to recognize the names, but one of them looks like an Acro(?).
We put the bits in our existing tank, and everything seemed fine for a few days while we started up the new system. We started noticing some green algae on the corals, however, and since we had gotten a jump of the cycling of the new tank by pulling water and rock over from the established tank, we moved the coral bits over to the new tank. (All fish are still in original home and will stay there for at least a couple weeks.)
May have been a mistake...
We're starting to see Coraline (?) algae on the transferred rocks in the new tank, as well as a slight hint on the dry rock we added to fill out the aquascape. So, fine. But the acro has gone from silvery-white at the tips to now carrying a brown-green coat on the surfaces facing the lights. See pics for Parameters (tested with Red Sea kits) and condition of coral. Nitrate was about 20 in old tank. Right now can't reliably measure in new tank because of cycling and the
Nitrite remains above zero. Phosphate level in new tank is near-zero; we're dropping a pinch of food in every morning just to goose the bacteria and get things going.
1) Am I killing this coral?
2) If so, ideas for how to save it? E.g. should I turn off the lights? ( Running t5s for about 6 hrs a day). Other ideas?
