I am scratching my head on this one. I really want to get my Coral/Invert QT going as soon as possible and I can’t make my mind up how to start. I especially want to set this up from what I am experiencing with my fish that I bought from LFS that were diseased (velvet/possible flukes/ect.). Fortunately, I had planned a QT tank and I’m having 66% success so far :(. Anyways, I like the idea of keeping corals and inverts fallow for 76 days, just seems smart. That being said I spent a small fortune trying to set up the DT so I am trying to keep this project as cheap as possible. I also thought it could share dual purpose as a frag tank as well. Please let me know if you all have any ideas or could point me in the right direction.

I use a 29g tank with a basic SB Reeflite, small koralia powerhead, and a heater.

I initially started with sand...got rid of that and went bare bottom now. Also, you will see people recommending a simple HOB filter. I started that way and soon found it was tough to "clear out" detritus/diatoms/other algae with that setup. I did the HOB SMS for a simple marineland internal magnum canister filter that is working great now. I also have a couple chunks of live rock in there with a few spheres of marinepure for bacterial growth.

It's a work in progress!

Looks awesome! Check out this frag tank in this video... I can’t ID it though :

Keep in mind that water quality changes fast in small tanks. Be sure you have some live rock or a good filteration system in mind on your QT tank. I'd treat a frag tank/coral QT tank as a nano reef myself. Probably the most expensive part will be the light - I'd try to use the same kind of light you use in your display.

I was going to cheat with a black box.... try and save a little money there

Any thought how to feed a small cleanup crew in QT once the tank cycles?
