anyone care to explain this subject (video below), in normal human lingo and how it relates to coral husbandry? it seems like nitrogen fixation is one step beyond the well known coral-dino symbiotic relationship.

the video mentions nitrogen availability - shortfall and oversupply - does this have anything to do with triton ndocs?

any microbiologists out there?

@tenurepro there's a bunch of scientific mumbo jumbo papers on this topic that popped up during a google search, so you might be interested! hahaha ;Cat;Cat;Cat

On it! Thanks for the tip!

Omg - I watched the video... science communication fail :(
Will have to read the papers, but I think I got the general gist of things. There has been A LOT of attention on the role of beneficial communities of bacteria that live in organisms - the microbiota. Eg microbiota in vertebrate guts have been shown to help with metabolism and immunity, among others. Seems like the video is discussing how the coral microbiota is helping with fixing nitrogen in coral tissue, and how this shots the nitrogen / phosphate ratio inside the coral. The video also mentioned that altering the n:p ratio can affect the thermal tolerance of corals, making them essentially bleach at temperatures that they normally wouldn’t bleach...
will check out the primary literature and report....
