Coral now?

I'm very big into hobbies. I operate a hobby shop that we specialize in remote controlled hobbies. I also am addicted to those hahaha but I can see this can be as expensive and more :)

I was in to stepper motors and war birds. There are 4 radios on my shelf next to a 39" P47 still in the box. I'm waiting for the cameras and viewers to come along a little more then I expect to dive back in. I have a friend that flies the ten footers. When I go back in I hope for a head gear viewer that I can still see the bird too. WITH turn left and right, up and down in the cockpit camera control. The technology is here but it needs to mature. Last I checked my radios are pretty much out of date now. I bet I have 30 or 40 servos.

Have a good evening and enjoy your tank.

I haven't got into fpv myself yet but I'm sure I will. I'm into helicopters as a main focus and fly some 3d planes. I also race offroad weekly.

But the tank is my new adventure that I started now so my son (1 yr old) can learn some responsibility from it when he is older. I figure get all the waiting out of the way now while he doesn't have a lot of interest lol.

I'm about to dive in and build my own dosing system, with five heads. I will be ordering the heads from Aquacave, the rest will be all me. I love projects!! Since I have the interval timers the five head dosing system will be costing me about $200. The heads will cost me $175. You can't even touch a dosing system with five heads for that. The nearest price I can find is a three head with a four head expansion for just under $600.

Welcome to the hobby Justin_92_92! Keep one thing in mind,, we all were once noobs, and to be honest, with all the changes in technology that comes with the hobby, we will always be noobs! Best of luck to you and your tank!

Thanks mayday! 8 years ago I started my first SW tank. It lasted a year or so and only 8 weeks ago had I ever heard of "cycling" lol so you can guess at how successful my first tank was lol.

I had a yellow tang in my 20 something gallon tank and always had a porcupine puffer (5 total because they died a lot). My LPS had no problem setting me up ;) they don't exist anymore lol. I bought everything from them so they new my situation too. I was young and dumb with no bills then lol

Ah, i was lucky when i started out. I was in college and the LFS was run by a fast talking, loud, and sometimes extremely blunt family. Scary at times, but they would not sell me something i was not ready for. They were very informative and made sure i was taking good care of my fish! Luckily they were only a 8 minute drive off campus so i was able to frequently visit the "barn" they converted into the store. Luckily they didn't deal corals because as a young and dumb college student, the costs of trial and error could have been trouble for sure!

What's a dosing system for? Sorry I'm still a noob lol

A dosing system is a motor driven pump that copies what is used in the medical industry to dose meds. You use it to add alk, calc, iodine, mag, trace elements, supplements, or whatever you would like to add daily without having to rely on being there every day. You can dose top off water, some even dose lime water into their top off water. You can even dose salt into your change water tank to a reach your specific salinity.

I want to dose my alk, calc, iodine, trace, and supplements. I currently dose all these based on even and odd days by drawing the products into a syringe and shooting them into my display or sump tanks. I do that at even and odd so I won't have to dose them all every day. My wife and I tend to spend large amounts of our time in the Colorado Rockies during the summer. My dosing process is too much to ask of my son to come by and get a grip of. So I am going to build a dosing system. Does that explain it?

Check out my thread in the DIY folder where I say I'm thinking to build a doser and am asking where to find an interval timer. It goes into more detail and has links to some parts.

Very cool. Sounds like a smart thing to have. I need to try and get better on a schedule. I came home from work one day and my lights never got turned on :(. I now have a timer. Just not plugged in lol

Mayday; I wish my LFS was like that then. But now I am doing more research and understanding before I buy.

I'm looking for a ro/di system. People say the cheap ones on eBay are fine. Do you guys think the same? I have a well and was told I need a booster pump. Any truth to that matter?

Having a booster pump all depends on the pressure that you currently have in your water system now and the type of unit you buy. Some already have boosters built in. I have two units in my home. One has a built in booster and the other does not. All i did was turn up the pressure on my water pump to the house system in order to get the 50 psi that my unit required. Many would say to avoid this because of stress on your water lines, but i had no problem with it myself. I could also be wrong,, but i believe the system will still work under the desired psi water rating, but just won't run as effiecent when it comes to its Gallons per day rating.

Great! Looks like those are exactly what I was looking for. But after having a couple more sites to look at I've found even more things I want to get eventually lol. I wish I had a bigger tank already. Hmmmm

Heading to bed, can't wait to see the coral and fish in the morning!

I hear you there Justin, i have often wished i could have an unlimited one time shopping spree! I also know the feeling of wanting a bigger tank! I was thrilled when i started up my first 55 gal which seemed like a monster to me when the largest thing i grew up with was a 10 gal. Now i have multiple tanks with my main display being a 150. As much as i love the 150 for my fish, i was much happier with the 55 gal for my reef tank. With size comes more expensive equipment to match, and it takes that many more corals and fish to make it look like it actually has life in there! The big bonus though for me with having a bigger set up is a more stable environment as far as water chemistry goes. I work out of state during the week so my tanks are all alone for 5 days at a time. With the smaller units, i would often come home to a disaster, especially in the winter if the power went out or something. Also water evaporation was a nightmare on the smaller units if something happened to my top off setup! If you master a small tank, you are good to go on any larger setup in the future in my opinion!

Wow, pretty rough day for me.

I made a fish trap to get my damsel out and knocked over a can of food into the back filter part of the tank...The power heads sent it flowing through the tank :( I noticed this morning that the coral has one spot that seems to be closing up a little. That worries me but the parameters are fine still. Hoping that gets better soon.

Then i posted this post but longer and never sent it and hit refresh and lost it all lol. Im going to bed. I still havent got the darn damsel either .

AH! Sorry to hear about that my friend! Keep an eye on those parameters! If you didn't get much out it won't take long for it to start breaking down. Make sure you have a bunch of water mixed and ready to go just in case you need to do a rescue or water changes! But on the bright side, if you need to do a quick tare down to give your rocks a quick rinse and a tank vacuum, you'll have no problem getting that damsel!!

I know the pain regarding the catch of pesky fishes. I am still hunting my Coral Beauty because it has turned very aggressive towards anything new I put in the tank. It killed a juvenile orange shoulder tang as well as a yellow tang. I've tried everything from starving the tank to the soda bottle trap. I still have hope though, one of these days I will be victorious !!

I moved some LR to try getting the little guy and it almost got real bad real fast :(

I cant bait him into the bottle because he has plenty to eat :( lol But i netted alot of the food out. Hoping the crabs eat the rest. i have a bunch of crabs in there. Possibly 13 or so. (cheap by the dozen )

funny story is i live near canada, Closest pet store is actually in canada. I went there for crabs and snails. I didnt want to tell customs that i went to canada for crabs so i told him I bought snails. Turnes out that its illegal to import snails from canada into the US. I had some problems on my hands hahahaha. I got them to call the higher ups and plead my case and was able to keep them (not that I cared but i had car trouble over there and didnt dare drive back to bring them back and break down on the bridge and hold up traffic. Turns out the car trouble was nothing major but i wasnt sure at the time)

So they let me take my snails and go home.

LOL!! That would be a story! I got busted for smuggleing snails!!

Also, i decided to finally catch my large maroon clown today. He has been making a mess of my sandbed since he outgrew his anemone and beat it to death! Hes been faning all the sand out from under my rock and having a deep sand bed, started to colapse my rockwork. I didn't want to have to do it, but hes just becoming to big of a problem. Not the most fun trying to catch a fish with a net that it will barely fit in! I don't usally have a hard time catching my fish. I use netting to block off all the escape routes in the rockwork and then all i do is give them a little chase until they get tired out and then easy scooping.
