Coral only to start

I agree that I don’t think anyone should just jump into corals first knee deep without really thinking it through. I don’t mean to imply that this was the easiest way to start a tank. But I do find that if someone is really interested in trying this approach to reefing that maybe trying to help them get started in a relatively approachable way helps more in the long run. I started my first tank with fish and then added coral and was super discouraged after an ich wipe out so all the tanks that have followed were started with coral only and then I caved in and introduced fish. In some ways I think nutrient balance may be easier to establish in a tank without fish and only coral as most nano people will argue. I thought they were crazy until I did more research into how to make a nano successful. So many amazing ways to start a reef!
Thank you so much for the advise, I also am thinking that this might be an easier way to maintain balance in the aquarium. Then add fish

I plan on doing something similar. I would love to have both fish & coral but I will be away from my tank for extended periods of time. My plan is for some zoa's, Duncan's & some softies. Once my pod population is sufficient maybe a mandarin. I have an auto feeder that I would use one a week and auto water changes.

I would have someone checking on the tank once a week and a Maintenace company every other week.

I know this is not ideal but I really want a tank. This is not my first tank but my last tank was 10 years ago.

That sounds like a solid, well thought out plan.

What softies are you thinking of putting in?

Harpo thats kinda my situation...coral only, I spend a month in Florida every year....and go away a lot in between...so i keep putting off adding fish till i get back, then something else comes up and postpone it again and again...
