Ok everyone im looking for opinions. I have a 20 gal long with another 20 gal in the sumop for a total of 40 gallons total volume. Take fish, flow, and lighting out of the equation. What would your very fisrt coral be for under $50? No palys or zoas. Doesnt matter if its lps sps softies. And why would said coral be your firat pick. Ove already done my research but now I want to gets some personal experience.

Thanks for your time!

Well I personally love Green Star Polyp Coral because it’s a great colour and provides movement in the tank. It does grow quickly, but it’s one of my personal favourites and is easy to care for.

Xenia is again beautiful but also very invasive and will grow everywhere so don’t add that unless you want it growing all around.

We’re to stop really, just have a look the LFS and see what you fancy...

Well unfourtantly the main reason for this question is that my closest "lfs" is 4 hours away. So while at pictures and info on a dpecific coral can only do so much. And there are very little reefers in my community so its not like I can just go down the road either. From what I have seen gsp is very invasive but also very easy to propagate?

Oh I see, you don’t want to be doing to many 8 hour round trips then! Lol

It can be invasive yes, and it’s very easy to propagate as well.

GSP can be controlled by leaving it on an island, then it wont spread. GSP is nice to look at while it moves in the flow. Can get Devi'ls Hand, sinularia and hammerhead/frogspawn for less than $50. Just be aware that Kenya tree and pulsing xenia are both VERY invasive and can take over ur tank bc they spread by dropping parts of themeselves to spread. Many have regretted adding these.

Yea im planning on staying away from xenia and kenya trees for that reason. Xenias are cool but since its going to be my first corals im wanting something thats easier to maintain and wont be overly troublesome.

Millepora requires pretty heavy feeding, water flow and intense lighting. As for temperature, maintaining cooler tank temps between 73-74 degrees will make the coral pop color wise. Warmer temperatures of 77-79 degrees are ideal for growth.

Sorry to here you don’t have a lfs near by. I really like going to the reef store. I can pick up $5 or $10 frags so if anything dies, I didn’t loose a ton of $$$. I would go with a frogspawn or hammer coral, nice movement in the water. Mine have adapted to my tanks water quality and lighting.

Yea unfourtantly any were I look anything is going to be $40 or so even if I can scoop a $5 frag up as I still have shipping. But it looks like wwc has free shipping over black friday.
