Coral Placement - Art or Science?

Hoping some experienced reefers will chime in here with their thoughts on coral placement. Is there an Art to doing it correctly or is it more of a science?

Will that acro up top Grow too large and over shade the corals below? Is that torch too close to those other corals and might sting them? Or are reefers just luckily with their placements and grow outs?

I’m always envious of these beautifully aquacultured aquariums highlighted on R2R! Maybe one day….
 
It’s both. My tank is small so a few times a year I go in and do a thinning/shaping of the corals. Otherwise certain zoas take over others and everything starts growing together.
