Hello all!

I'm getting back into the hobby after a 7 year break and it blows my mind to see all of the updates and upgrades to equipment since I stepped away!

My current tank is a 20 gallon hexagon, and is just about to finish cycling. I've been trying to get some ideas for different types of coral/coral placement to go in the tank when the tank is actually ready for coral (not in the near future). I'm thinking of keeping it simple. A mostly softie with maybe a few LPS here and there. What are your thoughts?

You could add coral right now it's totally fine.
Obviously test your water and maybe start with Softies before adding your first LPS, I would treat the LPS with some patience for the time being. But IMO, one of the best things you can do to establish a system and introduce biodiveristy is go on an aquarium crawl through to all your LFS places.
And look for massive collonies of Zoanthids, GSP or mushrooms on large rocks. And buy the biggest colony you can find on mainly the most important part, the rock the coral is growing on. The more rock you get with the coral the better. This speedruns your systems maturity cycle. But it can be pretty shocking to see your rockwork turn into a natural state when this is done.

i would start with soft corals, as mentioned above. once your tank matures you can add LPS, and then SPS.

personally, i would wait until you start showing coralline algae in the tank before adding LPS/SPS. softies should be fine with consistent, proper water parameters.

long term you may be limited to what you can have in the tank based off the dimensions and shape of the tank.

What kind of lighting and flow do you have? WRT what kinds and in what order, those who posted prior to myself covered that.

I know one thing: I love the hexagon tank! I would start with softies and eventually get LPS coral.

I'm keeping it pretty simple/basic for my first tank after my hiatus. The lighting is a spectra aqua knight v3, for flow I've got a hygger mini wavemaker.
