Hey guys. Im making a trip to my LFS tomorrow in search of some more coral for my tank. I want to do some research ahead of time and run some ideas by you guys to make sure I dont do anything stupid! Ive had my eye on some really nice orange mushrooms that they have, and was wondering about their placement in my rock work (high, low, medium). Any info on that would be great/info on whether or not they are advisable for my size tank. They also have some Elephant Ear Mushroom that caught my eye, but I read that they can get out of hand and eat fish??(!!!) I would love to own one, but again, not sure about them. I currently have two Candy Cane (Trumpet) corals that are small frags, a Green Sinularia small frag, and some GSP (isolated on its own rock). In short, 4/4 of my current coral is green, and Id like to throw in more corals obviously. The mushrooms (both regular and Elephant Ear) would be orange and would work perfect, but as I said, I dont want to do anything stupid! I run a Current USA Orbit Marine Led on a ramp cycle for reference of my lighting. Any other suggestions would be great (pics would be awesome too!!) Thank you guys!

When it comes to coral there really isn’t a tank size it’s just when they start touching and getting to big you need to frag them back

Ok cool. I guess what I mean for “tank size” is I dont want anything thats going to grow so big so quick that I have issues as a beginner. I made that mistake with GSP before I realized I needed to isolate it and was glas I caught it the same day J bought it. Im really looking for suggestions of coral that wont overtake my tank and wont destroy other corals.

Also, I am considering moving my two seperate Candy Cane Coral frags together and putting them in the same spot. Any issues with this?

Pretty much anything will eventually grow out of a 29 gallon, just give it time. My 29 is stocked with green striped mushrooms and red mushrooms which seem to wind up anywhere, but it did take a couple of years to spread up off the bottom. I had some reds work up to the high light areas of my tank where I want to try some SPS, I should have removed them early on and now there are several. I had a nepthia that was bigger than my hand an practically growing out of my tank. I recently cut that back hard. Candy canes are nice, they are managable, easily fraggable and don't send out sweeper tentacles like torches and hammers, which I've had as well. I recently put GSP's back in my tank to see if they would keep the mushrooms from spreading too much, but my mushrooms seem to grow quicker and just put out babies that float to new areas to settle.

Here's link to my tankI'm bored, let's see your reefs.

My biocube is a sps tank I say try some birds nest, also try zoas I’m not a big soft coral guy I feel like soft coral gets pushed on beginners to much and smaller tanks. Favias can do well too

So are you saying mushrooms may not be ideal? Im also considering Toadstool Leather Coral. Any thoughts here?

It all depends on what you want in your tank. I wanted mushrooms in my tank because they are easy and I wanted them covering most of my lower rock, which they do, but they also do very well for me, at least the two I have. I bought a different green mushroom rock a few years ago and only have one left, they others seem to crowd it out. Mushrooms seem harder to frag when compared to other softies like your sinularia, that won't creep around onto other rocks or pop up somewhere that you didn't put it. I had a toadstool in my 38 gallon, it was nice and I did cut a frag off of it which also did well. They can get really big and produce a lot of mucus.

Coral is just confusing to me as a newbie lol. I keep looking for sure shots and stuff I dont have to worry about but it seems everything comes with a qualifier. I dont want to make mistakes right now just to regret it in a year or two and have a major issue

No they are fine I’m just not a fan of them I feel there are just as easy corals that are more colorful and better looking

What are your opinions on Zoanthids??

Heres a pic of my tank. Any corals youd like to see in any certain spot?

I like zoas and palys, they just don't like me. For whatever reason I've struggled to get zoas to live long term in my tank either they were too shaded, wrong spot. I have some brown\green button polyps that I've had in some form since 2001. I've added some different palys a few months ago and they are doing well, so I order some zoas this week to try again.

Check out Acans. Super easy. Not a weed. And there is a huge spectrum of colors. Some of the "rainbow" Acans are pricey $50+ for frags. I can typically pick up frags (2-3) polyps of oranges, reds, greens for about $10 and the multi colored ones for $20. Just depends. They like low to medium light and low to medium flow. Another option I would recommend are chalices but they can get very pricey quickly. Leave the top left part of your rockwork for SPS down the road. Heres a picture of my Acans on my office tank.

I was looking into Acans today at my LFS! I added them to my shortlist for ones I want in the future. I picked up a Dragon Soul Flavia today after about two hours of research while I was standing there pondering it, lol. Heres a pic. Only $60, huge steal for its size and vivid coloration

I also picked up an Orange Rhodactic Mushroom as well!
